Whenever I enter my picture in a challenge, the picture looks fine until I submit it, and then there are white flecks all over it. What is causing this & how do I eliminate it?? Please help me. Thanks.

Thank you very much, I hope this will help with the problem. I am still new at this.

I just looked at your photo, "after the storm", does this have the problem you are talking about?

I did notice the areas around the trees have some areas that are not so pleasing.

This could be a result of resizing the image to meet the size requiements for the challenge. Not really sure

Yes, that is exactly what I am talking about and you are right it happens when I resize. Any suggestions?

Which program are you using to resize?

I'm not real familiar with the quality of that app, but you might wanna try Adobe Photoshop Elements instead.

Maybe someone else can exapand on this for you/me! Most uf us prefer Adobe Photoshop, but the cost can be prohibative, and while there is always software piracy, as a software developer I always try to actualy pay for my products.

I'm not sure how much stuff is different between the two (full version and Elements) but I'm sure a forum search would provide some answers!

Don't know that one, but see if the program has a quality setting. Just remember try to make the image as close to the 150k limit as possible without going over.

Thank you both. Fadoi, you bring up another good question. I just do my rexsizing, but how do I know how big the file is before I send it?? Usually I e-mail it to myself to see the file transfer size, is there an easier way to check?? And Russell, I am definitely saving up for Adobe, my brother-in-law said he knew I didn't have it because he didn't have it, he's pompous sometimez. I'll show him...lol (until he reads this & buys it first)

When you edit the shot, are you saving frequently as jpeg? Saving too many times in jpeg could degrade picture quality. Try to only save once. Also, are you sharpening too much in your post editing?

Yes, I believe iam saving it several times. I haven't used the sharpening tools yet, I am basically taking the pictures, and either cropping as in this weeks photo, and/or resizing.

...and most important work on a copy of the original image. When you win you have to send a copy of your original.

When saving up for a new program remember that Photoshop Elements 1 & 2 are good programs to start with. Other options are Photoshop 7 and CS, but that depends on what you will be doing with the programs.

Also Paint Shop Pro is an option. So many programs out there, but it depends on learning curve, cost, options, etc.

Great, thank you for your help. I have added all three of you to my favorite photographers... it is very nice to get help while first starting. My brother-in-law is a member to DPChallenge, and will NOT help me at all. He thinks i am an idiot. Therefore, my goal is to get a ribbon photo before him for bragging rights..lol.

You can try Adobe Elements 2 Demo(Free) by downloading from Adobe. Don't know if the demo has a save/resize mode.

Edit: If the demo has the Save for Web mode then all you have to do is: Click Save For Web>Image Size>largest side 640>Quality (Move left or right until it's below 150k)>Save

I will do that, thank you. I also already downloaded demo of NeatImage. Maybe between them I can work it out. I will definitely let you all know after this weeks challenge, I am going to take my parallel lines photo tomorrow.

Remember that you can download as many times as you want until the deadline to get it correct. Unfortunately this makes you change pictures frequently and wonder if you submitted the correct one, but first things first.

Do you mean download a better or different picture for the challenge? I was wondering that too, because for silence, I submitted, then unsubmitted, then submitted again, I think the DP people were wondering what the heck I was doing.

You can download a different picture or the same one with a different crop, really up to you. Once it's midnight server time, then it's too late.

Compare you time with the server time by scrolling to the bottom of the webpage, because this site is used all over the world people don't have the same time and submit too late :(

Your photo is 560 x 420 and only 100K. Everything looks better at the max size allowed 640 x whatever and 150K.

To help with image quality (less noise) try this:
take as big a picture at as a low an ISO as you can, with proper lighting. Less light, higher ISO, etc will make more noise to start with. When editing, either do all at one sitting or save as TIFF in between. When adjusting levels (or curves) if you try to lighten an image too much you will add noise.

Save resizing for last. It is best if you resize to 50% or 25% of the image as opposed to a given pixel size. You want to make the pic about 500 to 600 along hte longest side for an entry. When saving it as a jpeg, hopefully you are given options as to what how much compression or quality to save it as. DO NOT save 'for email' as any program that has that option degrades quality something fierce. If Photoshop, try to stay at quality 8 or better, and if it cannot be small enough, try reducing the size of the pic a bit more. Also, make sure your video card is set for true color (32,000 or hi).

Any decent editor will show you the file size you are working on and what size the saved file will be. You can always look at it in windows explorer - just check the file's properties.

Ulead PhotoImpact is a very good program. //www.ulead.com/pi/runme.htm for a free trial. I have found older versions of this program at Staples etc for under $10 in their big CD bins.

I looked at your picture. Did you really use f48? If that's the case, you might have been capturing detail that confuses the program when you downsize the picture. The program can't resolve all that fine detail so it sort of wipes it out. It's like oversharpening the picture. Maybe try lowering the apeture down to 16. But, I could be wrong. I often am.
