S-Curve
09/02/2010 04:40:03 PM · #2
Hey people, I have a question in regards to my potential entry

Can the S curve be backwards or does the line HAVE to be in the shape of an S?
The picture that I want to submit has a clear line running across it, but in a way that creates a backwards S
If necessary I could flip the picture, but to me that looks awkward and I like it better the natural way.
Do you think people would be so picky as to give me low scores for not being an exact S?

I wouldn't be so picky. The point is to use the technique and that is certainly the S-curve technique regardless of what direction it goes in.

For the most part, you'll probably be fine with any sort of S shaped curve regardless of chirality.

But, be aware, some people will still vote you down because the blasted thing isn't purple...

Challenge Details: An S-curve is a line (often in the shape of an 'S') that leads the viewer through the image. Use the classic S-Curve to compose your photo. The curve may be literal or implied.

I would say that you should be okay unless people don't read the details!

They don't.

This means that an S-curve isn't always in the shape of an 'S'.

So, I think you'll be fine.

Ok, thanks. well I am relieved then. I really didn't want to flip it.
Though, I am not really expecting high scores regardless :-P

Actually shot one with an S-curve just a short while ago.

A backward S-curve is known in photography circles as a 2-curve and is very different from an S-curve. I'd vote it DNMC!

So there you are: Let's see, averaging it all out, (carry the one, square root of the 2nd power, lose the one, add seventeen+some more stuff). AHA you're gonna get a 5.

Yeah, just joking.

Go with the picture that excites you and meets the Challenge as best you can interpret it. And... good luck! It's a fun game.

Is flipping the image allowed in advanced?

It affects the entire image equally, so it should be allowed in Basic. (unless I'm completely nuts anyway..)

Yes, it's allowed.

I've got my entry in. I'm not 100% thrilled with it, but hopefully I will come up with something better over the weekend. Might not have much chance to edit any more entries though, with our GTG this weekend it'll be busy.

I hope you guys know I was totally joking. I left the smiley off on purpose, but it's killing me now so I have to fess up. :)

I'm not even waiting for further posts to say I hope you realised I was only joking .... Calling someone a troll is the worstest thing you can say to a dper even with a totally huge smiley

I'm in. Seems like a low turnout at the moment, but it's early. I've puked on my shoes lately, but I 'm really happy with this one. And that's all that matters. Get in there, folks.

As long as it has some sort of curve, I wouldn't hold it against you....

I'm envisioning at least one entry with wine glasses in an s-curve and a bug on an s-shaped stick. I'm sure yours will be more original than those
09/04/2010 09:18:20 PM · #22
Too kind. I've hired bugs to carry wine glasses in an s-shaped path.

You thought unemployment in the states was bad. I can't fire these runts fast enough.

Disclaimer: I make fun of wine glasses and bugs because I don't have the talent or the lens. Or the imagination.

Has anyone perfected the s-curve waterdrop yet? :)

The curve may be literal or implied.

I went with implied. I wonder how many DNMC's I'll get.
