Imagine if on the challenge details it says to not take pictures of cats, sunsets, flowers, kids, etc.
Would we see a lot of original new compositions instead of snapshots? If I have an entry in the challenge I'm not going to use the sterotyped shots listed. Any other sterotyped ,overused shots to avoid? |

How's about, seeing as it is a free study and a chance to do something interesting, that you take just those very subjects that you think are tired, trite, unoriginal and boring - and do something original with them ?
Maybe that would be more educational than trying to avoid them ? Just a thought.

Gosh, I've seen some great shots of all those things! Fantastic birds, wonderful sunsets, the works!

Birds are ok. I'm so tired of hearing about cats, I could puke. There are people out here that don't like birds. There are always pictures of birds in the challenges, yet there isn't a thread started EVERY day where someone states how retarded they think the photographer is for taking another bird picture.
We can go down the list and there would be a small group of people that don't like whatever subject is listed. But it seems that the forums are dominated by users that are vocal in their disdain for other users because those other users like to take photographs of things that they like.
rant over. the only thing more boring than cliche pictures is the constant bitching about subjects people don't like to look at. |

The subjects may be overused, but they're appealing to look at. When photographed well, these things sell prints and win a disproportionate number of challenges. All else being equal a flower image will beat a dead rat pic any day. Unfortunately, I don't have a cat or a boat, it's too early for flowers, there are too many trees around me for a decent sunset, and my airplane is um... in the shop. ;-) |

I don't know how you can pick a shot for the "March Free Study"? I've already got 3 cds filled with pictures to pick from. Mostly garbage but at least a dozen potentials. |
