I have never noticed until now that when I paste pictures into PSP I seem to be losing quality, or the pasted image is at least different in some ways from the original. For example, I wanted to comment on this photograph from the Fire challenge:
//www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_vote_image.php?IMAGE_ID=62770
...but when I paste it into PSP to zoom in, horrible blocks of solid colour are visible in the dark region that are not present on the original image. This is even more noticeable when the monitor brightness is turned up, and strangely these blocks and specks are in a slightly different pattern each time, as if PSP is trying to simplify or compress the image in some way.
Does anyone know a way to fix this or lessen the effect? |

Are you viewing it at more than 100%? |

I use PSP 7 and maybe I can help. What do you mean when you say "pasting images into" PSP? |

I can't duplicate the problem. Could be your color settings, proof setup or even your method of getting the image into Photoshop. We'll need more info to help. |

There might be a couple of things going on here. Make sure that when you are getting an image from the web that you COPY and then PASTE into your editor or folder. If you choose to use SAVE AS and then save it somewhere the image will likely get another heavy does of jpeg compression, probably the same amount that originally was applied to it which had to be low to began with for the web. This will seriously degrade the image. And, as pcody already pointed out, be aware that if you are viewing the image at a magnification greater than 100% that you will be seeing the actual pixels and compression artifacts. It could be other things as well but this can be a start. If this doesn't work maybe you can provide more information regarding your workflow.

I'll try to be clearer.
1. This is Paint Shop Pro 7 specifically. I do not see this happen at all when I paste to Microsoft Paint, for example.
2. The blotches are there at all zoom levels.
3. I just right-click, click copy, then paste as new image (Ctrl + V) in PSP.
4. The same thing happens if I go to Save Picture As > JPG or BMP. Opening these files in Paint works fine, though - no loss of quality.
5. Saving a copy of the file in Paint, then opening in PSP doesn't fix the problem, either.
Do you reckon it is the way I send the pictures to PSP that makes the difference? It seems to me that it applies the colour blotching to every picture it opens. I was hoping there might be an option somewhere that is turned on and shouldn't be. |

Not ten minutes after I posted the above, problem solved! Randomly looking through File > Prferences it occured to me that I had recently enabled "Color Management". It turns out this was causing the horrible colours, perhaps in an attempt to imitate what they would like like when printed. |

Glad to hear your problem is resolved. I'll be on guard to not let it happen to me. |
