Hi Kevin. I don't mean to be a bother, use your portfolio for your pictures. Use thumbnails in the forums please. I apologize if I'm the only person that finds this type of thing inconsiderate.

These are very good. I especially like the last one.. and particularly don't like the second one - too much shadow on one side of her face, and her eye in the shadow and her neck seem strange.

Are you able to post thumbnails of these and then link them to the larger photo? People on dial-up will have a hard time loading this page.

;)

The first and last ones are definetely my favorites. There's something about the stair one that I really like. I guess is it's just the combination of the stairs, black and white, and model. Maybe a bit too much stair, but that's just me. The last one I think has the most dynamic lighting, very effective use of light and shadow. But pretty good job on these, definetely better than I ever could.

Maybe work on getting some more light into their eyes, either with a reflector or some on camera flash - they seem a bit dead just now.

Nice pictures, for my own education I would like to vocalise what I would have like to do more or less with them

#1 Crop the top a bit so that the ligth fixture was not seen

#2 Try the same shot with 70 or 85 mm and the model slightly rotated to either show more of hips OR to hide them completely - the body proportions are a bit distorted, thus disturbing on this one

#3 put some space on the top OR cropped a bit tighter (first preferable)

#4 dark circles under eyes due to back-top lighting - can they be removed, an improvised reflector perhaps...

#5 and #6 perfect I would hang them :)

That said I really like the tones and lightplay, once again the above is not a criticism but just self education

Thanks everyone for the comments. I traveled well over 1,000 miles in 2 weekends to shoot 4 different models. Missed the wife and daughter both weekends but I'm trying to get proficient at portraiture and lighting with people who don't mind having hundreds of shots taken over several hours.

Gordon,
I had the diffuser over the flash head the whole time (well, until the last 30 minutes) and while it was needed for the first set or so I really wish I'd noticed and taken it off. The little LCD panel isn't always good enough to notice the catchlights when you've got the preview in Info mode. The model in the first few shots has a tendancy to hood her eyes so even with the 550 and the ProMax head on it those just didn't have as much sparkle as she can have in her eyes.

goinskiing,
Yeah, I shot the stair photo as wide as I could get it and then I cropped to come up with this but I think I still need to crop it some more. This is one of the types of edgy angle shots I want to try getting more proficient at with the wide angle but you have to get soooo close to the models with that 17mm that sometimes it can get difficult to frame the shot.

KarenB & pcody,
I understand that dialup connections won't be able to get these images. That's why I labeled the message as "Large Photos:" to begin with. I really don't expect that anyone who will comment on a half-dozen portraits wants to go clicking through all those links. I would expect that someone on a dial-up connection will either realize from the title that "Large photos" means large photos and not try getting this or they'll stop their browser and use the back button.

Tarique,

Thanks for the comments and I see what you're saying on those. I hadn't even noticed until you mentioned it that I cropped the top of the head off in 3 (man I'm headed to bed after this post). In photo #2 that was a pose the model wanted. We shot about 25 different ones trying to get the angle right 'cause it never looked right to me, either. I'm sending her proof CD to her tomorrow and we'll see if any of them fit what she wanted. That young lady had a lot on the ball; she knew some poses she wanted to try and I hope we got them for her.

Thanks again,

Kevin
