I have gotten comments that stated they weren't voting and I was so happy to receive them. I get few comments and lots of votes - votes, especially the 1, 2, 3 and 4s tell me they don't like my photo but not why .. people are always asking for comments in the forums and they don't get votes in the forums - they are just asking for feedback and that is one of the most important things to me .. I am not a member of DP to win .. I am here to learn and if I get a high vote, bonus, but nothing compared to the sharing of knowledge.

I'm not sure if that feature is available for non registered users but if is is, you can go to My Home>My Preferences and change the option to show scores for submissions during voting week under Site Preferences. Hope that helps.. |

Geez, I do that all the time - figured if I am not voting but I love a shot I'd at least let them know. |
A lot of people do this for their own reasons. Personally, I think it's like a slap in the face even if you are praising their shots. It's great that you like their shots enough to comment, but truth be told this is a photography challenge contest, and YOUR vote along with other people who like the photo a lot, but fail to score it are hurting the photographer. You COULD be bumping their score up circumstantially, and making them happy at the same time. So even when you say you like their photo...most people are thinking to themselves (at least I am)...I'm thrilled you like my photo, but thanks for not helping me score higher. Like I said...a slap in the face. Of course I see the world through different glasses I suppose. |
Seriously, a slap in the face? I would think that you would prefer a comment that may help you in the future as opposed to a vote that teaches you nothing. The fact that they even took the time to comment on your image should mean more than a slap in the face! I personally don't vote challenges that I am competing in...I don't feel that I can be impartial enough. |
Yes, as I said I see things different than others might. It's my opinion. As I said, people can do BOTH make the photographer happy with their comments AND show appreciation for the photographers effort by giving them an honest score that would help them in the challenge. After all people come here to both learn things to improve their skills, AND try and win a challenge. Not voting in a challenge that you are competing in is a personal choice, and I have no problems with that, but I don't feel being impartial, being true to yourself and being disciplined enough to vote honestly regardless of one's own score is hard. You just do it, and feel good about yourself that you did the right thing. Also, quite frankly I don't have a problem with people leaving a great comment and abstaining from voting if that's what they want to do so be it. It's the tagline of "Great photo! Unbelievable colors, awesome contrast! Best photo I've seen so far! Oh, NOT voting. That last part after all the compliments in the slap in the face in my opinion. Just leave that part off and the compliment will be appreciated. Otherwise it's like the state telling you...Hey you won the lottery!, Oh, sorry...the deadline to turn your ticket in was yesterday. Too bad. The not voting comment takes the wind out of the sails of any great comment in my eyes, but hey..like I said I see things differently and we are all entitled to that. :)

I'm sorry I confused you. You can see your Ave Score for each challenge on your profile page (My Home>My Profile). If you want a breakdown of votes, there is a spreadsheet on klkitchens' profile page to track your scores |

ok so I just finished scoring... my scores are very high this round... I didnt score based on the art itself but on how the art was captured... and I have to say I found that overall most of you did a wonderful job! (I did not enter) I actually ended with a 6.5 something average. (the last 3 ive ended right about 5.5) and i only had 1 score below a 5 wow!

Of course a positive comment is always great to have, its just that when that comment seems to represent the minority vote, you miss the vote all the more. |

What's the etiquette for responding to someone's comments during the voting period?
I've asked a specific question about my entry and don't know if its ok to respond?
Don't want to appear to be rude. |

Also, is it possible to update your comments on the entry while voting is going on?
And my latest. Personal best so far. Very pleased.

This is now known as the Yandrosxx thread ; )
You know you can edit your own posts and not post three comments in a row? ; )
Anyway, I prefer not to comment back during a challenge as a general rule. If I get a nasty comment or a question regarding something that could potentially DQ me, I will might respond during the challenge.

I really don't see why my scores are starting out sooo low, I thought my submission was great actually, and am very proud of it, and always will be. I just don't understand why the low votes, and I wish people would "have" to comment on each submission they vote on, so the submitter knows why they voted so low.

After all the bitching and groaning over this challenge I was pleased to see 145 entries. We have some very talented photographers here who know how to show off their other art forms! :-)
Mine is at 5.06. I'm hoping it stays at 5 or above. |

Jamie, post it in a forum thread after voting is over asking for critique - by far the best way to get honest and constructive feedback. I'll try and remember to look your shot up next week after roll-over. |

Well, I can tell you that for me personally, the most important thing is that I like it... My "missed focus" entry is sitting at 4.87 at the moment, and to tell you the truth, I really don't care, because I love it... So all I can tell you is that people vote certain ways for all sorts of reasons... It doesn't mean your photo is bad either, I have seen many shots finish in the 4.5 range that made my jaw drop...
As for me, I'm alittle stumped on how to vote on certain images in this challenge... I'm seeing some images where the photographer just took a photo of a piece of art. Well how do you judge that? This is a photography contest right, so how do you judge a photograph of a piece of art? I am not asking this to be a smartass or anything like that, I am honestly curious how you guys are voting these shots. How do you judge? I'm not going to vote them down, afterall, it meets the challenge description... Anyway, I was just curious... Lastly, there are others who tied their works of art in with supplies or other things, I am not talking about those. I am talking about the straight up photos of artwork...

As you see fit.
We've received a surprising number of validation requests on those entries from several people who should know better. The rules say "You may include images that are clearly recognizable as existing artwork when photographing your entry." So as long as it's obviously artwork, the part about 'judging a photo of a photo' does not apply and voters can ponder how to score a photo of artwork like you're doing now. |

I guess I don't know if I should know better, but I'll own up to having submitted a couple of validation requests...
What threw me off, I suppose, is that the rules say "include." I read "include" to mean "incorporate as a part of the composition" more than "constitute the entire composition."
Perhaps I never thought about it enough, since I'd have no issue with an abstract of a sculpture, but a straight-on shot of a drawing strikes me as very odd in a photography challenge. |
