First off, let me say this really was basically a first attempt at this style of photography for me, I'm usually landscapes, rust, old things. Lets just say outdoors..

Lighting, indoor shots I generally stay away from, so my experience is quite weak here.

With that said. I spent quite a lot of time on my "Lingerie" photo, and I honestly want to know why it didn't do better. To be honest I thought it was better than it's score in the end but I'm not going to sit here and tell you I thought it was suppose to be a 6 or a 7.. But I thought it would be higher 5's at least. ( okay was my expectations set to low already? haha ).

So what did I do right? What did I not do right? Was this photo just doomed for low 5's from the beginning? (ie concept not good, etc).

BTW I have also asked for a critique from the critique club as well, as honestly this photo has already been a big learning experience for me anyway..

BTW if you don't want to post your critique here, please feel free to PM me.

Left this comment on your image: I found the concept to be fairly creative and the shallow dof a plus to the composition. Where this image earned a 5 from me was that it lacks contrast. I'm not sure how you converted the image to b&w but there is a good tutorial here DPC B&W Tutorial.

Well, you didn't "tank", you finished right in the middle of the pack. Scores on "lingerie", in general, naturally came out lower than expected (average 5.1, 6.0+ makes top 10) because it's a polarizing topic, in the sense that a certain number of people aren't comfortable with "sexy" challenges, as voters/viewers, and a certain number of shooters felt the need to lampoon the challenge, which is relatively rare.

Now, speaking photographically and/or conceptually, why didn't this score better? I have a couple thoughts:

1. At the *conceptual* level, your image doesn't match expectations. When we see sexy undergarments on the floor and naked legs walking away from them, we are thinking, basically, in the "striptease" mode, lingerie as bait, as enticement. But that's not what your title says. Your title is telling us that after 20 years of marriage lingerie is unnecessary. Why? Because we don't have fun anymore? Because we are in such a routine we don't need it? What exactly are you saying? Regardless, your point, as expressed in the title, doesn't seem to be supported especially well by the image. And I think that ambiguity is hurting you to a certain extent.

2. Photographically, it's a fairly lackluster image as far as lighting goes. It's dull and muddy. The cropping is awkward; the bra's too near the bottom edge. The legs overlap unappealingly. The corner of the bed's a dark eyetrap; it would have worked better with a nice, wooden bed-corner or something, some piece of furniture with implied attitude.

On the plus side, you did well conceptualizing the DOF, in particular. All in all, I'd say, given your background, that this was a good learning experience for you. Congrats!

Awesome, thanks Bear.

I can see that the title at least in your case as well as others, was probably a bit misleading.

I was looking for a title that didn't force a story, I didn't want to force it one way or another.

I was hoping that what I was saying was either "naked is better" or "who needs lingerie "on"" when it could be used as other things.. bread crumbs etc..

however in one way you showed me that did work, cause your take was "We didn't like to have fun".

as this was for a challenge maybe I should have just picked a more sexy story line, and I under estimated what the title can do for a photo..

Thank you for your insight.. I'm really really enjoying the comments I've had so far and I'm going to look at the B&W tutorial tonight for sure.

One additional thought, I was debating not having the bed in it.. and just having wood floor.. so far with the comments I'm guessing I should have just done wooden floor.

Thanks again.
