Just got my new X-Drive II today... and I think I've fried it. :-(

I have one of those generic adapters and I set it to negative polarity instead of positive.. The adapter starting smoking a bit, so I turned it off after about ~5-10 seconds. The X-Drive itself still turns on and appears to be operating fine, but I wonder if I may have fried the charging circuit in the X-Drive and/or the adapter? I'm too worried to try it again in the office in case I short something.

Can any elec engineers offer any reassurance before I get home in 4 hours and see if it's ok? :-(

I am an electrical engineer, but don't take this as professional advice.

Usually when you let the smoke out, things don't work well.

Smoke...bad... ;-)))

Yeah - I'm thinking I'll be very lucky if the adapter isn't fried. I'm just hoping the adapter sacrificed itself to keep my X-Drive II alive.. Thanks G.

Well, both adapter and X-Drive seem to be working fine.. Strange but true!

You and your crazy theories of it being bad for electronics to smoke, Gordon.. ;-))) (Seriously though, I'm amazed it works.)

Count yourself lucky Paul - coz normally when I short stuff and smoke comes out - its bye bye.
But I still make it a point to open up the thing and see whats inside:p

Smoking should be legal.

It might as well be here in NY... I think the fines are up to something like "loss of one nut" by now!

Believe me, I do! I also appreciate not shorting the plug socket in the office, or setting off the fire alarm!
