i received a pm from AMO8893 who joined dpc a couple of days ago .

this is the email i received ..

"Dear Roz Batten,
My name is Ann O'Hair. I am a photography student at Stivers School for the Arts in Dayton, Ohio. Stivers is an urban public arts high school and part of the Dayton Public Schools system. More information on Stivers School for the arts can be found at www.Stivers.org/photo.

I am writing in hopes to solicit a donation of a piece of your photography for our annual fundraiser. The photography department has, for the last ten years, held a silent auction to raise money for the department. The auction consists of student work and donated work from professional photographers. All the proceeds raised through the auction go directly to the photography department and are used to buy cameras for the students, darkroom equipment, and general photography supplies which keep our program running each year.

The auction is set for April 9, 2010. We will gadly accept any donation and will mat and frame any unframed work. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me any time. If you wish to contact my teacher, his email is below. Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,
Ann O'Hair

There have been a number of other people who got this message. Others report doing some research and finding things a bit sketchy. Plus, I can't help but notice that Ms. O'Hair managed to misspell her name on her DPC profile.

Frankly I only donate to charities I am familiar with. I have donated photos to local fundraisers before. But I would never donate to some stranger who sent me an email.

I think a few people got it (including me). I haven't followed it up at all.

I got one of those letters, too.
On the website it says that last year "featured" 130 pieces of photography - why on earth would they need to look past their own students, parents and community for images? Surely they can find way more images than they could ever hope to sell even without outside help?

there's a list on the site of photographers who donated last year - do you recognize anyone?
02/06/2010 04:25:01 PM · #7
ha! My digital photography teacher is on the list. Do you want me to ask him about it?

I got one too. I'm a little skeptical of this sort of thing when it appears someone has just signed up 2 days ago to send out spam.

Why would a legit requester be using a hotmail account?

I think this is legit. I'll call the school on Monday and confirm (I live in Dayton). I think I may even offer to donate a copy of this image.

Dayton is a very poor school district and Stivers is not a well off school. I don't think the school system has the resources to print enough images from just thier students. I do believe that they get works from local photographers and promote the auction accordingly.

I think they might be legit. They appear to have some minimal standards of acceptance...

They haven't contacted me.

Having a local's input would probably make a big difference to the way many of us feel about this.
I'll look forward to hearing some more from you, thanks Tim.

i would be very willing to donate or provide very cheap a print or prints .
