I just uploaded some black and whites from a winter excursion I went on the other day if anyone would care to take a look at them. Any comments would be appreciated.

Winter Hikes Collection

Jason,

Outstanding overall! There were a couple of shot I think I'd have tried boosting the brightness on to get the snow a bit whiter, but living in
Wyoming I know that snow shot can often be a lesson in compromise.

Great work.

Jason they are wonderful! Did you shoot with the b&w option on the 602 or colour and adjust afterwards. Sometimes I miss my 602!

Mike.

I shoot in color and then convert to black and white with the channels mixer and some other adjustments. Glad you liked them. I've been going on a lot of hikes on the weekend this winter and I'm going to be adding a lot of photos to the collection soon.

Claya. The problem I was having with the exposure was that it was hard to get the snow not to be too bright while keeping the rest of the photo light enough. I dodged and burned a few of the photos to get the mix that I wanted, but most of them are only slightly adjusted. I'm trying to decide which ones are the best and get them perfect since I don't have a lot of free time lately.

Yeah i really liked them.. or most of them. I like the row boats pictures best. The first one was my favorite. I agree that some of the looked a little darker than they needed, but overall i think they are some great snow shots.
Did you remember to look at the histogram while shooting? or do you like to do that?

Brrrrr....

Glad to see there are other B&W enthusiast out there... I liked Dock and Branches most.

I tend not to look at the histogram while shooting. I know I probably should. It partially has to do with not being familiar with the camera I'm using. I should really play with it more and learn all the features. It also has to do with the fact that it was very cold and the batteries and my fingers tend not to last long so I shoot as quickly as possible.

yeah.. i agree/understand.
i have shot a bit recently outside, and time is a major factor as to how long i am able to shoot.
but i think histograms (after learning how they worked) are SUPPER valuable, especially when shooting snow. I recently read a tutorial on histograms, and read about shooting to the right..and it was SUPER helpful and i think improved my shooting technique very much. IMO everyone who shoots digital should read the tutorial and know how the histogram works. Also there is a good tutorial on shooting snow.
here are both the links.
shooting snow (whites)
shooting to the right (quite possibly the most valuable tutorial i have ever read)

make sure you check those out.. they helped me TONS.

thanks leaf. I'm going to check those tutorials out now. Hopefully I'll get out in the snow again soon to try out the techniques.
