Now, all of a sudden, because of a couple of whiners (I won't mention any names deafwolf), it's suddenly a new, heavy-handed policy. Doesn't seem to be in the spirit of this site, which usually takes a more measured approach to these kind of changes. |
You are right. There is no 'requirement' but it is becoming obvious that it needs to be fixed one way or another. This is a photography site and why we support forum activity for anything else is beyond me. There are many other appropriate places for that. I just think that all non-photography related chit chat should be able to be blocked by those who don't want to read it by having it in the rant forum.

Scott, you really shouldn’t air you personal inadequacies and inhibitions to the site. If that was your attempt at an insult, it was as failed as the Nazi remark. Sorry you have such a problem of not discussing photography on a photography site. Perhaps you should try www.anl.org.uk or something to get your voice heard. I assume though that you are here to take and display pictures?

At the risk of jumping in the middle of a controversy, I found the MADD post touching and informative, and far more interesting than the little kibutzing posts where people are saying no more cats, sunsets, etc.
If you ask me those belong in the rant forum.
Just my honest opinion.

We had a very similar situation happen here where i live. Some lady decided that she ddn't like the roadside fruit and vegetable vendor sitting at the end of her street. so she went to the county council and raised such a fuss that now there are no roadside vendors allowed anywhere in the county. A side effect of this was that Yard and garage sales are now also illegal. and now for the cherry... this lady liked to have several yard sales a year. she shot herself in the foot. this is annother way how one person with a bug in thier @ss can effect an entire community. |

Now you're talking!
I think there are differences between some general, off-topic threads (say, "dessert recipes," "my upcoming surgery") and a "rant" where someone wants to express political or similar opinions.
The posting on drunk driving told a story in photographs ... why is it inappropriate? I didn't click the link in the "Epilepsy" thread, because I guessed it was something I might not like. Too bad some other people can't stifle their curiosity ... or maybe it's a reflex: "Blue Underlined Text = Link = Click Left Mouse Button"
It would help if people accurately titled their threads, and also if they would search the forums and see if there is an existing thread on their topic before creating a new one. |

You're the one (maybe among others) who started the whining, you're the one who started with personal insults (I guess the reason I lost my crack pipe is cause you were hogging it?), and you're the one being "anl" ("all photography, all the time... whaaaaa"). And yes, I've taken and entered more photos than you on this site. So what? |

Hmmm, so we should change this site to a personal benefit, charity, cause promotion, feel sorry for the world anti Nazi site then and forget about the photography because some people want to have agendas other than taking pictures? Is that what I read into this?
This gets better by the minute. |

This is another example of where forums get to be a pain. Let's keep the personal bickering private where no one else has to read it.

Excuse me mister wizard. You will notice that I didn't comment on either threads because they were out of place. I thanked the powers that be for getting it off of the main forum where people talk about photography, something I see that you seem to have no interested in.

Thank you. Maybe it's time to lock 'em all up.
Stop me, before I hurt myself...
BTW, thanks Paul - Those are my two main gripes with how this all came down. Guess I lost my articulation with my crack pipe. |

I don;t care one way or the other but don;t people make a conscious choice of entering a thread that is not fotog-related? I mean no one is automatically taken into any threads. They have to click into it right? If it aint your topic couldnt one just avoid it?

Would you go to a porn site to read about depth of field and then click only on the posts that were on topic? *grin* |

This, from the DPC Registered User's Agreement, is still in effect, right?

Wow, a very heated topic! I'm going to throw in my opinion as well. I'm all for the off topic general discussion forum (non-photography related) and also feel that it is quite different from a rant.
A lot of people seem to keep mentioning that this site should be for photography only. Let me use an analogy here. Colleges and Universities exist only to provide higher education and training in a specific field. However, do biology major classmates only discuss biology 24/7 in class and throughout their entire stay at the university? No, they do not. But why? Because there is more to people than just one of their interests.
When people participate with others in an activity that is mutually interesting (photography in this case), other topics get brought up all the time because we want to find out more about the people we associate/compete with. Also, it's easier & more comfortable to discuss/debate issues with people your already associating with rather than strangers in some other forum you could care less about.
That's my take on the whole issue. I post every once in a while, but read the forums regularly in my free time at work. I think it would be a shame if the non-photography posts were relegated to the rants section when they are clearly not rants or outlawed completely. |

There should be another forum added called "Off Topic". So "Off Topic" would for things like the cool links that Pitsaman posts every couple days. :D
And as someone already said "General Discussion" should be only for general discussion of photography related things, and "Rants" could then be used for just that, Rants, and not for off-topic things. :)

My real question here is why did a thread have to be moved to the rant when it was started before this? The thread was very important to me and now a lot of people who would have seen it won't see it cause was moved to the rant section.
Also if you are going to do this, when are you going to start a special thread that can also be blocked like the rant can be for those begging for comments?

I note in the MADD topic thread Pitsaman placed some pictures from the movie Master and Commander; I assume these are copyrighted and he doesn't own the copyright.
Pitsaman or admins: you should probably remove those.

This expresses how I feel about this perfectly.
I see this site as a community of people who have come together out of a mutual interest in photography. Once they become friends it's only natural to also want to talk about other stuff too.

Some people are promoting an agenda of tranferring their own personal biases onto this entire web site.
One of the best attributes of this site, one that is oft-cited by people who like it here (including some who would now exercise content management over the forums, in fact) is the community.
I think that this whole thing was catalyzed by something that's a lot easier to fix: and that is that just recently, some posted links to disturbing material, sparking a large, perhaps over reaction. But we should be careful we don't throw the baby out with the bath water. What we really need to do is figure out how to limit that kind of controversial or frankly disturbing stuff, without throwing out what makes this site so appealing.
I think we just need to change the name of rant to Off-Topic, and have two subforums in rant: "Off topic Controversial" and "Off Topic Chit Chat". . . . . . . . .
The quality community is what it is because it works and has worked. There's no need for any drastic solutions, just refinement of existing ones.
