Yikes! Good thing I shoot with a Canon or I'd be blind AND up in flames by now. :-) |

My seeing eye dog and I plan to sue DPC for telling me to shoot into the sun so I can pay for my hospital stay at the burn center. |

Robert is absolutely right in this regard... in French, "Contre-jour" is defined as "à contrejour avec la lumière (du soleil ou de l'éclairage) placée derrière le sujet regardé ou photographié" ,which translates into what Robert said.
Best of luck to all in this one.

The light source doesn't need to be in the frame. It can be reflected onto a white surface and bounced back behind the subject creating the same effect.

But it's SO much better to have the light source in the frame. It's a very fun way to shoot. Now if I could just find a light source.... the one I prefer is not going to make an appearance this week. |

It would be, just not the direct source, only the reflected light. Like that image of the pigeons you posted somewhere, I forget where. That was reflected light from the sun on the sidewalk if I'm not mistaken. |

I'm being brave this week! Instead of the DPC friendly absolutely gorgeous shots that people are going to come up with, I have a funky, kinda edgy shot that won't do nearly as well. But I really, really like it. (It's not that I don't want to do edgy, I just don't know how to find/see it, so it's fun when I stumble across one!) |

For sure. Imagine a mirrored building reflecting the light at you, the way it produces panes of light on the ground? Pose your subject there, that's cotre jour. Like Deb's pigeons shot he's mentioning.

That one? One page back in this thread? :-) I was shooting directly at the sun, by the way, but yeah I see your point about it not needing to be in the frame. Still helps to shoot in that direction. |

Well darn, I like my shot, but I know it's not classic. I'm working over in A Bug's Life at the moment. Maybe I'll go that way.
EDIT: OK, I got me a ribbon over there. ;) So you guys can argue whether this would have been Contre-Jour or not...

OK, IMO it is a classic Contre-Jour. You have some secondary fill light behind you but the camera is pointed at the primary light source, the stadium lights. The fill light behind you compliments the overall shot. |

Actually, the lighting in the stadium is symmetrical; that is to say there's exactly the same lights behind him, and that's what's lighting the cheerleaders. So, now what?

I would give this a 4 or 5 because the contre-jour effect just isn't there. Your subjects are lighted by other lights than the ones behind them. If they were silhouetted against those lights then we would be closer tot he mark me thinks. |

The most amazing thing about the cheerleader photo is that the guys are holding them up with just one hand ! ok - and the fact that the girls are both smiling and balancing . . even if someone lifted me up like that I sure wouldn't be smiling !!

Any suggestions as to how to achieve Contre-jour without lens flare, or is that an accepted outcome with this type of image?

The description says the 'main' light source not the 'only' light source so I am taking this at it's word. |

Weather has not been co-operating for the past three days for the idea I have...if the skies do not clear it looks like I will have to table the idea for another time:-(
But on the other hand that means I will still get to enjoy what others come up with. Good luck to all who enter! Looking forward to seeing some creative, nice and beautiful work:-) |

I'm so sad. Contre jour is one of my favorite shooting styles/methods, but I am not able to enter this week. No sun. Sniff.... |

cheer up... you can use artificial light, right? (i checked in the prvious contre-jour challenge and quite a few artificial light photos made the top 30).

I counted two, unless you count Glad2badad's image which could be artificial light too. That would be three. ;\

Wha? I stopped counting at 27, and that doesn't include glad's or other "questionable" ones. |

27 artificially lighted images among the top 30 in that challenge? I'm sure you meant in the challenge and not top thirty.
Please post the ones I missed. We're talking artificial light here.
I'll post the two I saw. Ok, I found three more so five out of thirty.
Plus Glad2badad's makes a possible six artificially lighted images among the top thirty.
