Comments have been made about the models used in some of the challenges, be they cats, kids, flowers, etc. What some people fail to remember is that some of us have very busy lifes and don't have time or money for that matter to go out and find new subjects for every challenge or travel around for a day looking for the perfect shot.

I'm the mother of 3, one of them a 1.5 year old boy who is very busy and INTO everything, can't be left alone for more than a few minutes at a time. Yes, I have used my daughter Melissa as my model in at least 4 challenges and as a result she is becoming recognizable but considering she's my most willing model that is what I have to work with. Just be thankful that my 6 cats aren't more willing to be models!

Not a rant, just a reminder for some of the others

and you seem to be assuming everyone isn't very busy with things of their own...?

i imagine most folks probably are as busy, maybe even busier than you...
keep that in mind.

No, that is not what I'm assuming, sheesh. What I was attempting to do was remind others that complain about the models/subjects used that sometimes that is all that is available to some of us so we work with what we have.

Hard to believe it's time for another break already

maybe you just shouldn't listen to those that complain.

i know what you mean Deannda, it is hard to find new subjects or one that will be different than what everyone else will shoot. I try not to purchase stuff for the challenges and only use what I have on hand

I used to have soo much free time it was unreal...but now I dont have as much time and have cut down on the number of challenges I enter. Im not taking a break, just being a little more selective in what challenges I enter so I dont overburden myself will all my things I have going on

Agreed. Not many of my live subjects want their pictures taken. People don't seem to like certain types of inanimate objects also: figurines, stuff animals, etc.

If it's a good picture, meets the challenge subject, who cares who or what you photograph. If they are willing to pose and don't mind, who cares.

I've been taking all my shots on the last days or last hours. The highest scores of the year have been taken during the last hour before the closing of the challenge.

Current challenge was taken 30 minutes before the close of the challenge and is currently at a 6.0. Wish I had thought of it earlier, maybe I could have won a ribbon.

I think I've been giving bonus points for the people willing to submit a great cat picture :)

I would like to see a picture of the energy 1.5'er

Interesting....

Are you getting comments about a subject being used over and over again or something?

IMO, I don't really think it makes much difference 'what' you photograph in most cases. If what you do is visually appealing, it will do well.

I think she's refering, at least in part, to comments in this thread.

That's the key. Time to revive the "snapshots" thread? :)

Deannda - Unless it's just the current challenges, it looks like you've only used your daughter on one of the 11 challenges you've entered this year. I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. And look at #2 in the Things that go... - it's possible to use your at-hand models in ways that aren't so obvious to the viewer. Don't let a few snide comments bother you...

Thanks. I know I shouldn't let them get to me but somedays are better than others and today was a very busy, hectic day and even after grabbing a short nap (thank god James still takes them) I was still too tired to think straight.

But like I said, maybe it's time to convince the cats it's time to start a modeling career, hehehe, I do have 6 of them available!

Maybe you can use Melissa and I'll use Isaac for a straight month's worth of challenges ... we will build up the voters' tolerance until, when you finally submit a picture of a cat, they'll moan and whine about how they were expecting a picture of her.

Of course, they might not have to be exactly recognizable every time ....

I'll use Travis (aka Capt. Destructo), just let me know which month!

I was going to use him in a nice solemn "Letting Go" picture, and he kept looking at me and saying "CHeese," with this ridiculous look on his face.
Time for Plan B.

I hear you, that was my first thought, something with James but he's either cheezing the camera or completely to mobile and nothing comes out clear. Melissa is my second choice but we've run out of time..............

Or have we?

I don't have a kid to use, but I sure would love to have a month of Brandon, my cat, in the challenges. Wow. Think of all the different possibilities! Just let me know which month.

Hey No Fair! I don't have a cat or a little kid around. How am I ever supposed to compete with you guys?
02/09/2004 11:24:14 PM · #16
Hey Shelly. Got a figurine? Seeing how they are so popular, maybe I'll do that instead of Brandon. The same one over and over, for a whole month. Wish I had a little person, but maybe a "precious moment" would do the trick.

an open challenge where the same mian subject must be useed in each challenge. each time in new and creative ways. a child, a bird, a dog, a box, a flower, a finger. it doesnt matter what, hopefully somthing with some personal importance to you. Kevin

I think the point would be to have fun by "shoehorning" our subject into the regular topic ... of course your idea of fun might have to be 4.2831 ....

Speaking for myself, I think the biggest issue (for some people) with having a recognizable "model" is that it makes it possible to identify the photographer of a shot. This "ruins" the anonymity of the voting process for some, and may lead to biased voting, whether conscious or unconscious. It would be like putting "This photo was taken by " underneath certain photos.

Hey I have a 2 year old, but he will never be in a challenge photo because he will not even stay still long enough to take a snap shot.

Kids....hehe

Of course, this is exactly what is meant by the complaints which triggered this thread. And avoiding that recognition would be part of the challenge.

My most common subject in challenges to date has been myself... I'm in at least 5 out of 36 entries since August last... Guess that blows away some of the annonymity.
