Nah, that claim's a red herring. Everyone knows that not following the challenge description isn't grounds for DQ. The challenges are generally about creating an image that communicates the topic to the viewer, and not necessarily about shooting the topic itself. Heck, I didn't actually shoot what the challenge called for on any of these, and there was no outcry or demand to self-DQ:

Granted, technical challenges are a bit different, but the greater purpose of those lies within our own efforts step outside our comfort zones and learn a new technique or skill. If you choose not to do that, then you only cheat yourself of the experience. If you didn't enter or vote at all, then you've neither lost nor gained anything.

Well in that case....I freely admit that I did not follow the challenge description in this challenge as I was not even in the same country as my home. So the people who are pushing for me to self DQ can go take a flying leap...as I won't be doing it.

I saw the 47 steps as almost a Candid/landscape/street photography/macro/FS type challenge as there was no way someone would know whether or not the photo was actually taken 47 steps from home. For all I know, someone has a really nice beach house. While I don't understand WHY the person would then say "It wasn't 47 steps from home" the person didn't break a rule. He broke the spirit of the challenge, but what's 1 challenge entry in all the entries in all of DPC? If you are unsure about a photo meeting the spirit of the challenge, don't vote on it.

Candid challenges: Staged shots that make them look candid.
Self-Portraits: Unless the person is known for taking portraits of themselves, there's no way of really knowing.
Titled: Take any image and tilt it. Whether the titling of the image plays well or not, I have no idea, but I don't see many people going out and saying "This would benefit from a tilt (This is my personal opinion)

Almost any challenge can, with a clever title, make the challenge. With the beach shot, '47 BIG steps' or 'My home is the Ocean' or 'I'm a Fish'...that title might make more people aware that the person is either shoehorning it or thinking outside the box.

In the end: no rules broken, no DQ. Good luck with the upcoming challenges.

I'm pretty sure this has gone way off track and has gotten very personal. I think it is about time SC lock it and everyone go back to their own lives.

What has been said has been said, it obvious what was done isn't against the rules, doesn't make it right, but also does no good to go back and forth and create further ill will about the situation. you need to step back and realize this is a site just for fun, virtual ribbons if you will, it is not life or death, its not the end of the world. No good will come of this, drop it and find another battle to fight if your wish is to battle.

I appreciate your response and there is certainly a lot of ill will from those who feel resigned to just shut up and accept being fleeced once again. This site is for fun and getting duped is not fun for anyone, including yourself. All we need is one of the offenders to simply request a self DQ as a sign of respect to the community. It will break the pattern and demonstrate self governance and set a precedent.

Is that too much to ask? Its an achievable and noble remedy potentially resolving a festering problem.

Somehow I don't think this will ever be swept under the rug. I do feel that nothing new for or against in this discussion can be raised. I think all the valid points have been raised & everyones egos have been stroked. We have even had insults. About the only thing we havent done is invoke Godwins Law

I have to thank IVO. His rudeness and offensive behaviour angered me so much, that I decided to go and play with an image in PS and just created one of my most favourite images while he was ranting and raving.

So thanks IVO. Wait about a week and then you can abuse me again so I can then create another artpiece!

At this point, a self-DQ is liked a demanded apology. It would lack sincerity, and just be a way to stop the bullying that the 'offenders' are experiencing.

I agree and feel somewhat the same. On the other hand, a voluntary withdrawal would be a gesture to the community and if they wish to tell me to piss off, I don't really care, as I expect it.

There is no bullying here. It is a struggle to validate which side has greater value. The community as a whole or the needs of a few photographers who admit unethical conduct? We all know the answer as we have voiced it. Now, we need to enforce it as a community.

My "bullying" is simply an insistence for change. Someone has to do it. In this case, it is IVO.

Do you think this needs to change? If so, insist for it as well.
