Sorry to all the marketers out there, but marketing is a con game and small businesses are being duped. Unless you have cash to burn or a very unique marketing strategy, or a razor-thin market to focus on, it's a waste of money. You might as well take your money and flush it down the toilet as much as give it to a marketing house, or spend it on advertising. If Joey is the product and the DVD is his marketing strategy, I'd say his strategy is extremely unique and his market--potential photographic professionals--is thin enough. A wholesome marketing strategy that actually makes the marketer money because he's also selling a product. It's a great idea. And what do you know, the buyers actually get something out of it. |

And, for all we know... He's got a production company that has PAID HIM a nice chunk of change to essentially star in these types of DVD's, and they are the ones taking all of the risks and reaping any of the rewards... He may just be doing nothing more but taking a ck, standing in front of the camera and going over things that are clearly second nature to him at this point and then walking away.. It looks kinda like a film crew came along on jobs he was already doing.. Just another take on how & why he's making the DVD's... Could you imagine.. You are now on such high demand, that someone else is paying you to make the DVD's like a movie star... :-).. Now, that's making it BIG TIME.. |

On the other hand, Joey now has lots of gear, he is now the educator, and with all the word-of-mouth buzz, he is getting some great shoots (and paychecks) so he likely isn't paying for table-top advertising. Like I said, to each his own. |
You're right I shouldn't bash him and I shouldn't have said anything at all. Sorry!
Good luck to you mate.

thats general prob around here. Basic rules of dpc
- you supposed to speak what everyone here likes to hear and your talk should be sweet. You are not supposed to have any opinion that is against general dpc opinion. |

That says it all right there... At least it exemplifies my own feelings about this whole mess. I've been busy as hell this fall - and I owe ALL of my success to DPC. Thank you for the comments, criticisms, exploits, GTGs, and friendships. I don't claim to have anything like Joey's success, but I have managed to eke out a position of respect and "some" financial success - due to the contacts and participation on DPC.
Go Joey GO! :-)
[And if you've ever met the guy, you'd know that he is as humble as the day is long... He appreciates the fact that he started with DPC and learned a ton by his participation and friendships that he made here.]

I came across that first dvd and checked it out, while it does have some gems on it, just teaching style wise, not worth the cost for me personally. Its a lot of "umm slide this one, then this one a bit and maybe do this one a bit, etc" essentially its $250 to learn that trial and error is the best way to figure it out. The lighting set ups were useful, but for images like his they are pretty secondary to the post processing, and very basic for the most part.
I would love to have the complete fake blood recipes though.
*edit - i'm sure that now hes had some time and gotten some feedback after his first dvd, that this new one will address any issues like that, and that it will be much more descript and to the point on things. Still not in my price range, but good for him nonetheless.

His first one was only $25, not $250. |

He's an in-demand professional. He's no longer a hobbyist. He works with movie studios and recording artists, not his siblings and neighbours. His current product was professionally shot, edited, and packaged, he didn't do it himself. What's hard to understand? |

This thread was brought to my attention from all the nice traffic through google analytics. Thanks to all for keeping the thread alive and active, regardless of your view.
Some points to clear up
#1) DPChallenge is a great environment to learn. I have met some great friends on this website that I stay in touch with to this day. I'd really like to enter a challenge again for the fun of it.
#2) The DVD was made in response to all the workshops I have had to turn down. I am too busy and cannot commit to teaching on the road, so this is the best
alternative both to educate those interested, and of course financially for me. I run an honest business. I pay rent and shop for groceries like everyone else.
#3) There is no third party production company behind the disk other than my own. Simply put - It took a long time to produce on my own.
#4) Sessions is not for everyone. It has proven to come with very good feedback and be extremely successful to those who see money spent as an investment, and the knowledge as beneficial for them.
I am happy to answer any questions
Thank you
