I think she is referring more to some specific challenges that seem to really stand out, especially in the short term.

School- median score of 5.1685

Veggie- median score of 5.1656

Lines- median score of 5.1108

These are 3 of the last 5 completed challenges.

Though, I reckon the ribbons will all be in the 7s.

@Steve ( Yo_Spiff)... got your comment. THANKS a MILLION! You Rock! :)

@Wendy ( vawendy)... you recently commented somewhere (can't locate the actual comment) that the voting has been a bit harsher recently. Looking at the trends on the average score for all challenges, I come to the following conclusions:
a) trend for entire DPC history - negligible reduction of average (trend line had slope of -0.00028)
b) trend for last 18 months - negligible (trend line has a slope of -0.00013)
c) trend for last 12 months - negligible reduction of average (trend line has a slope of -0.000048)
d) trend has INCREASED over the last 6 months - negligible improvement of average (trend line had slope of +0.00028)

That's just looking at the average scores... looking at the highest score

a) trend for entire DPC history - negligible reduction of average (trend line had slope of -0.000091)
b) trend for last 18 months - negligible (trend line has a slope of -0.00021)
c) trend for last 12 months - negligible increase of average (trend line has a slope of +0.0000061)
d) trend has INCREASED over the last 6 months - slight improvement of highest (trend line had slope of +0.0013)

Trends for the lowest score

a) positive slope
b) negative slope
c) negative slope
d) positive slope

So the only real constant in those voting stats is that voter have been getting less harsh i.e. more generous in th past 6 months.

yup, I know that--but I was just speaking over the last 20 challenges. In the last 20 challenges, there has been 3 or 4 (can't remember which) challenges that averaged 5.1x; in the previous 20, there was only 1.

That's right... and you linked it to the end of summer (northern hemisphere of course... because we down in the southern hemisphere don't really warrant consideration ;) ) , didn't you? In interesting hypothesis... will look into it. :)

yup, because you have no excuse for the drop in voting--you should be happy and upbeat--it's the end of winter! So I figured it was all the northern hemisphere's fault!

Looking at the data over the 7 years of DPC there looks to be a fairly constant fluctuation in the average score and it doesn't look like its linked to the Northern Hemisphere seasons.

Some interesting factoids from the data:

- 6 of the 16 challenges between "Lucky" and "End" had an average below 5.2 earlier this year (i.e. worse than the recent spell)
- 2007 had only one challenge with an average below 5.2... for the entire year!!!
- Percentage wise, the worse to best years (assuming number of challenges with an average <5.2 is the criteria for bad) are 2004 (46%), 2002 (42%), 2005 (40%), 2003 (29%), 2009 (16%), 2006 (15%), 2008 (8%), 2007 (1%).

Started this challenge with a 5.6 after the first (and heaviest day of voting) and have slowly creeped up throughout the voting to a 5.96. Not nearly enough to win with all the great scores in this thread but I may be able to break 6.0 for the first time since joining.....maybe?

Always seems weird to get over a 6, and then good votes of 6 are what slowly pulls me down. A few 6's, a 5 or two, and then a high vote will yank it back to a 6.3.

I'm hanging in there too, not the score I'd dreamed of but an OK number. Shoulda entered one of the extreme ones, but I wanted to do "true" HDRI for this rather than exaggerated tone mapping...

Back over 6.3 again after being down for awhile. Anything over 6.0 in this one is a happy score, but it's fun being back over 6.3.

It makes me want to try the process again, well, almost, it was an extremely painful learning process because of some of the software I was using. (instructions? what instructions? Obviously I can figure it out myself... :D

For me it is about the process of bringing out the lights and darks of the image. Not the what I think can sometimes be excessive tonemapping.

I am having the same issue. I deliberately tried to make a "normal" looking image with a "High Dynamic Range" using Photomatix rather than making an other worldly tone mapped picture like I usually do. Someone did point out a technical flaw in my shot which is killin' me to see now, but most of the comments have been that there is "no HDR" there. Not true, unfortunately, but it is what it is. :(

That's what I have done with my image, it is currently sitting at 5.99 and I deliberately tried to keep the normality in the image. I have since redone it using a different programme and I like the new, revamped image and think it would have appealed to DPC and scored better. I will upload it after the challenge finishes.
