I think the description has people bunched up. I assume a lot of folks are looking for dramatic lighting...or dramatic lighting to go with or enhance a dramatic subject. Some people went for drama with little concern for the lighting.
My guess is that people are voting or looking for elements the same, as the way they shot. Me, I took that "Use compelling lighting" cue, as a big part of the Challenge...or at least what made it a challenge, literally.
Based on all the dropping scores looks like a bit if a mess.
eta: I also think people are defining drama itself quite differently. For example, people might look at The Empire State Building or a Cliff as being dramatic whereas...I don't. Breathtaking...maybe...dramatic, NO (in my view). Nothing personal to those of you who do but it may be a reason for the screwy scores.

Maybe but you could also say that Norma Desmond at the end of Sunset Boulevard was dramatic though you might not say "oh shit" to that...then again you might.

I'm broadly with this definition - it needs some sort of visual tension, not necessarily downright danger, but a tension even if just through the lighting.
Hey maybe this will be the first ever challenge to ribbon under 6 ?
:-)
p.s. just woken up and my score is even lower now than my last post. The slide continues.
is anyone out there higher than Delta_6 ? Is someone quietly gaining all these lost votes - or is it just grumpy voting ?

I would hope that my shot stays above 6 at least.
And if there is anyone, most likely there is, I don't think they'd be telling. Mind you a photographer friend of mine at work said there are some good shots but a lot of rubbish - his words not mine.

I just counted 54 images that don't really meet that definition...
But in my Mac's widget Dictionary/Thesaurus
3. she liked to create drama INCIDENT, scene, spectacle, crisis, excitement, thrill, sensation; disturbance, commotion, turmoil; dramatic, theatrics...
Synonyms that work better IMO than the definition posted and includes more of the entries. So, if people see or define it leaning towards crisis, scene, turmoil then a sports event, or clouds won't even register (re sports: unless seconds are ticking away on the clock) in their minds. Personally, I don't think drama requires conflict to qualify but some voters might.

dramatic scenes defined by the Mac Dictionary is even broader - unexpected, fascinating, hair-raising, rousing, lively, electrifying, impassioned, moving...to name a few but the list goes on.
dramatic gestures ostentatious, melodramatic, overdone, stagy, showy, splashy, affected, mannered, hammy, campy...
Now we're talkin. If the voters understood that ALL those work, scores would be higher, I assume.
Personally, I thought we'd see a lot of dramatic gestures or passion with dramatic lighting...more artsy stuff but I was wrong.

I started at and maintained very high score (low 7's) for the first +16 hours of voting and have been going down ever since. It's a good score but think it deserves a little better. I'm just stating what I see as the reason for the drops. |

I guess there is a question of how many of the entrants have also voted ?
;- )
Having just sat and looked through every one of these I am sure there are a few very strong shots.
I'm sure there will be at least one 7 by the end of the challenge

In other words:
It MUST be dramatic.
It MAY be about drama if it's also dramatic.
This is the second time in recent challenges where the challenge topic said something different than the challenge description and caused confusion. Which are we to go by? |

I'm about to go and vote this challenge... I took a peek at the thumbnails and was scratching my head thinking, WTF, where are all the "dramatic lighting" images... I didn't have time to shoot for this, but only read the description very quickly and what I took away from it was the lighting needed to have been dramatic.. So, I went to this thread and saw your post on page 1.. Then I went back and RE-READ the description.. duhhhhhhh.. I'm sure glad I did.. I knew I must have misunderstood something since only a few images really showcase what I consider to be dramatic lighting.. Lots of dramatic set-up's, dramatic poses.. I thought I was in the twilight zone.. Now, I know and will vote accordingly... But, something must be going terribly wrong here... If so many people are misunderstanding it.. Can't all be coinsidence ?? |

The description also says it can be dramatic due to the subject matter, not just lighting. I'm sure both would be even better. |

I keep bouncing around 5.7x and 5.8x -- and I thought I pretty-well nailed the challenge concept, regardless of which definition you used... I had a technically better shot I had taken the week before the challenge opened, so I had to re-shoot, and while I couldn't recapture my original image, I still think I came up with a great interpretation of "Drama," according to the description. Got all cocky and thought it might even be a top-10-finisher. Geeze, I doubt that now.
From my own voting, I'd say I found 15 that I really thought were very strong and appropriate for the challenge (not that others were "bad", but if you take my tip-top votes, those 15 rocked. I really wonder, of course, how many of "them" are "here" (posting in this thread)... And I wonder if I'll crack into that top group myself, assuming my top votes match up with the finishers...
Ramble, ramble, ramble. I dunno.

Creeping back down into 5.7x again.
Good luck, Dave ( Delta_6) -- I hope this challenge gives you reason to look like your profile pic. ;) I wonder if I've guessed correctly which one is yours? |
