...you look at your old photos and go "what the hell was I thinking?"; same time the people you admire their work too much becomes "well... not as good as I thought it was" and you try to find new mentors. |

Actually, these days, I look at my old photos and go, "why can't I shoot like that anymore?" |

You start getting positive comments from people who are normally your hardest critics.
You don't care (too much) what the score is, because you nailed what you were after. |

Although, I'm still trying to work out if you mean that my old stuff sucks, or that my newer stuff is actually better ;D
To qualify, I mean stuff from years ago, especially when I was shooting film, that I don't have online. |

When you yourself can see a difference in quality.
I noticed a big difference between my 2007 and 2009 images from Scotland.
When you're as close as we are to our own images sometimes we can miss improvements. |

...you "pass" on a shot, and know why. (Not that you'd know it by my scores...)

You can predict what the critiques on a particular shot will be, and then those critiques don't come in. |

You no longer give a poop on others assessments on how to improve a photo, you like just the way it is!! |

I dunno if that necessarily means you're getting better, but it sure means that you're getting more comfortable with the photographer that you are.
IMNSHO, the getting better is the result of that.
Once you shoot for yourself, and do what you want for the final result, then you just do better work.

A photographer goes to dinner with friends and takes some of his photos. The host of the dinner says "Oh, you must have a very expensive camera." The photographer agrees and the meal is served. At the end of it he says, "Thanks for the wonderful meal, you must have very expensive pots and pans."

Who else might I base it on, one or two comments out of 100-200 voters of whom some think Survivor, and The Bachelor are good TV programming.. |

This happened to me the other day on a pre-wedding shoot - I fired off a few shots and they asked to look, I generally dont let people but on this occasion was VERY happy with the results so let them. The guy then said "Wow, its amazing what you can do when you have a really good camera" and I fired back (quite rudely thinking back on it, for which I kind of regret now), yeah, and Stephen King must has a kick ass typewriter, have you read some of his stories...
But it came out sounding rather shitty and condescending.. ouch.. They were a really sweet couple as well which makes me feel worse.. in future - keep mouth shut and agree..

LOL! Yeah, sounds like you, Simms, but you really should save that for us and not take it out on clients. Especially nice, paying clients. :-)
I did two weddings recently, albeit for free. I'm not in your category, but I was quite pleased with the results. I think hanging out here may have helped a little.
