Hi everyone. I've been gone from this site for a while now. Life has been a bit rough lately, but I won't bother you with my stories, I hope to be back participating here soon.
The reason I'm here today is to pick your brains about a project that is very important. A dear family friend has been suffering from cancer for many years and her recent diagnosis has given her only a few more months of precious life left. She is one of the most talented photographers I have ever seen and she has just finished compiling a book of her writing and photography that she plans on printing up herself. Her birthday is coming up soon and we would like to be able to put a beautiful professionally made copy of her masterpiece in her hands. What I've been looking for is a place that can do a single or extremely short run of the book with high quality paper, color printing, and hard cover, that would be entirely customizable so we can get it to look just the way she imagined it, only better. Price is not important. I just want to know I am bringing it to the best place.
I would really appreciate any ideas you might have and if you want to keep Carole in your prayers that would be wonderful as well.

//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=51922 could be a good start - wide range of options and some links to places with varying degrees of personalised service.
You can also type 'book publishing' in to google and get a lot of hits for low volume or self-financed publishing.
G'luck

Thanks Gordon. How's your book coming along, what publishing did you decide on? |

Mine was mostly going to be a 'promo' piece to help move on to bigger things - it worked from that perspective. It was used to help get venture capital for a project I'm associated with and it was also a lot of fun to put together. I think a short run is going to be done of the booklet too, more professionally printed.
In the first instance, I just printed it out on my inkjet printer and got it bound at kinkos. This was the easiest way to have the most control over the print quality but it was a slow and expensive process.
It cost about $30 for a 50 page half letter size booklet.
From talking to people who do production runs, its easy to make one of anything - the hard part is automating it well.
If you are interested, it is available for download at

You might try looking into CafePress //www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/books.aspx
I don't know if this would be the quality you're looking for or not, but it could be cost effective.

if you have access to a mac, the book that they print through iphoto looks nice quality with different layouts, captions and such available. |

Jason, the magazine I work for did comparative reviews of "print on demand" Web services last year. These give you high-quality results, and you can order as many or few books as you like.

iUniverse got the highest score (5 out of 5): //www.iuniverse.com.
You're an incredible friend. I'd love to know how this works out for you, if you decide to share that story. Sending good thoughts your way. |
