Hi.

I have quite a simple question....which i cant answer myself. If confronted with the situation would you sacrifice pixels for zoom? What I mean is, would you buy a camera that had a great zoom but only 3.2 MP or would you buy buy more pixels even if it meant less zoom? I kinda want the best of both while keeping the camera compact...as oposed to my 7i but within my budget it's almost impossible. I'm going on vacation to Egypt next month, that's why I'm considering all this. I dont want to have to carry my huge 7i. Looking forward to your opinion!!

My opinion is, take your 7i. It's a great camera, and you're gonna want great pictures.

My secondary opinion is, get a great zoom, as long as you don't go too low on megapixels. Unless you hope to make 11x14 or 16x20 prints from your Egypt shots.

My tertiary opionion is, I'm jealous that you're going to Egypt and I'm not.

How many megapixels you need depends of course on what you want to do with the image later.
But maybe a small calculation will help too:
The optical zoom factor refers to on dimension, whereas the MP refers to two.
This means that to achieve the same difference in magnification as between a 4x zoom compared to a 2x zoom, you need to quadruple the pixel number (i.e. from 2 to 8 MP!, factor 2x2=4).
So if magnification is on your list you should definitely go for a good zoom.

Zoom.
But most important, get something that you feel comfortable carrying around. No camera is going to take nice pictures if you leave it in the hotel room.

unless the cleaning crew gets a hold of it...

How about cropping vs zoom.
If you crop a 3mp frame from a 5mp photo, you are in a way achieving the same effect as a bit of zoom with the 3mp camera.
Its the same deal with the crop factor of the dSLR's. You don't get more zoom from the same lens, you're just cropping an APS size image from a 35mm frame.

I don't know how the relation is between 2mp extra vs zoom, but I could calculate it tonight perhaps. Or just try it with your 7i.

DiMage 7i is huge? You can probably find one that fits into a pocket but to get one that size that is comparable to your 7i in zoom, pixels, and image quality you will have to pay the price of the 7i or more. I'd suggest taking your current camera and using the money saved to have a good time in Egypt.

If I go to a historical place, but don´t´wnat to carry a "huge" camera all the time... I divide my visit in two parts: Photographic trip and my personal trip. I visit the places, live with people and all this first, to know the places. This is the time to choose shoots location, angle, get some special access credentials and all that you need to catch up sttuning photos. Then I get my camera and go to the second part of trip. But I sugest that you bougth a back pack to put your camera and carry it with you allthe time!

I would opt for resolution over zoom anyday. You can always go back to the original zoom if necessary where if you need a tighter shot, you get closer, a wider shot, you move away. Are you considering a new purchase? What other factors are you looking at? Do you have any cameras in mind? If I were going to Egypt, I'd use it as an excuse to buy a 10D and a bag of glass. If I were looking for a pocket camera, I'd look at the Canon Digital ELPH cameras, or the Pextax Optio S4.
If I could take something a bit bigger, the Canon S50.

I am in a similar situation as you (minus the whole big vacation trip thingy) where I have my larger F707 camera for my serious work but I also have a really small camera, Canon Digital Elph, that I can always have with me for all of the other occasions. However, it is only 2mp and 2x zoom so if I had my choice now I would get something like the Canon S50 for an extra camera. You still have lots of resolution at 5mp and a modest zoom at 3x in a very small camera. My reasoning is that the majority of the shots I would take would not require a long zoom so I would want the majority of the pics to look as good as possible. 5mp gives you a little more room for cropping without compromising too much quality. I figure if I am going to have asecond camera than it better be small enough to literally take anywhere.

Egypt - Fantastic!!

It was when I was on my 3rd trip to Egypt in March last year that I realised that my poor old Fuji MX2700 was lacking. It took and still does takes great photos for a 2.1 mega pixel camera. I have had no problems with enlarging to 16 x 12. However what I needed in Egypt was a camera with a decent zoom. Your going to need the zoom or you will get frustrated. Where are you going in Egypt. If you need any info then PM me.

Depending on the locations you plan to visiting, or types of shots that you're planning on taking you may want to look into a wide angle also.

Zoom will help with nice details, but with a wide angle you will get the whole picture. To get the scope of the pyramids you will either stitch a panorama or use a nice wide angle.

The Kodak DX-6490 could be a nice compromise of price and features. It is 4mp and has a pretty nice 10x optical zoom. I think it was around $500 or less. It is pretty small for it's capabilities.
