This week's FU is Melethia!

NikonJeb asks:
Why pigeons, and have you any idea how many people see pigeons these days, think of you, and smile?

Hmmm.... not sure what it is about pigeons. Perhaps because they're simply just there. Everywhere. And I generally like critters of all kinds. And yeah, after Mark Peters entered a challenge called "Ode to Deb" with pigeons in it, then Andi entered a Lensbaby'd pigeon with my name in the title, I kinda realized that perhaps, just maybe, people do take pictures of pigeons and somehow associate them with me sometimes. At least a select few on DPC, anyway. An odd claim to fame, but I'll take it!

(An aside, which most of you TS'ers already know: When Mark's shot was in the Shadows challenge, I commented on it and he PM'd me to let me know it was indeed ode'd to me. I was tickled! I got up the morning of rollover and was delighted to see he'd ribboned! I dashed off a comment, then noticed little red lettering at the top left of the home page, telling me to submit my entry for validation. Clueless as to why my entry would require validation (I was in the other of the open challenges) I dutifully found the original on the hard drive, checked my editing steps, and submitted it as requested. It was about then I noticed that I had the yellow ribbon in the challenge I'd entered...)

JDubsgirl asks:
When was the last time you hick-upped and coughed at the same time?

Odd you should ask that - it was earlier today. Bread gives me the hiccups, and my allergies make me cough. Germany is lovely this time of year, but a wee bit challenging if you have allergies!

vlado asks:
Are there any DPCers that you are inspired by? Who are they and what is it about their photos that inspire you?

This is a very tough question - there are TONS of DPCers who inspire me - seriously - and not just because of their photos. To try to truly answer it would take pages and days and I'd still leave someone out. So I'm only going to mention one.

Lev Tsimring ( LevT)

Lev travels extensively and lets us see the world through his eyes, his camera. He has a wonderful, enviable ability to capture the humanity of a place - the warmth, the beauty, the people. He sees with a gentleness that really is inspiring. In a world where the news is all bad and getting worse, Lev's photographs are a breath of fresh air, a reassurance that all is not lost. He inspires me to try to do much the same, for myself more than anything. To see the everyday, see the possibilities, appreciate life. If you haven't visited his portfolio, I suspect you take some time and do so.

And I know this sounds horribly corny, but I'm quite inspired by Team Suckers for a number of reasons, not the least of which (and probably the most important of which) is the fact you guys really are a great support group. (A support group??) You tend to be true to your own nature - you shoot what you want, what you like, and you generally say the heck with the scores. (It definitely takes the sting out of a less-than-expected score when you know there are others in the same boat.) And you persevere. That, and you're all generally a bunch of goofballs.

If you were able to recruit any photographer (or non-photographer for that matter) to join DPC, from anywhere, anytime, who would you recruit and why?
Interesting question. I'm actually trying to recruit a guy I know from a LONG time ago - from a "bulletin board" (an archaic "chat" network, with DOS prompts, green letters on a black screen, and new-fangled 1200 baud modems!) who I linked up with recently through Facebook. Turns out he lives in Frankfurt now - I knew him when I lived in Omaha. I randomly pass along the site address to photographers I meet when I'm out and about, though I'm not entirely sure if any of them joined or not. As for "famous" photogs, I'm not an art or photography student, and while I do recognize the works of some, I have not studied them. I suppose the one that I would invite would be Henri Cartier-Bresson because he's a street guy. I like street guys. Come to think of it, I'd like to re-recruit boysetsfire and sevilduvarci.

You've entered a massive 281 challenges. Wow! What keeps you submitting, what keeps you motivated, and why do you have "Quit entering challenges" as a goal for 2009?
I'm a glutton for punishment. It's a simple, sick addiction, really, that keeps me submitting. The "Quit entering challenges" is something I try to do periodically and fail miserably. I sometimes get too wrapped up in scores and yes, I know better... But I did get a great comment on my not great scoring tree shot from cebuloulou which says in part: My little girl asks "How did they put the tree up there?" And isn't that wonderful? In fact, I need to go change my comment on that shot... Also a shout out to bassbone who sent me a PM about that shot with some very encouraging words. So even though I try to quit entering challenges, I'll get wee bits of wonderful feedback that truly outshadow the score thing. Until the next challenge, of course... :-) And though I threaten to sell my gear, I'd never do that (unless I had new, better gear, of course!) I really do simply enjoy taking pictures.

What would you say are you most under-rated, and your most over-rated challenge entries?
My most underrated? I'd have to start a list... :-) No, seriously, they're all rated what they're rated. Even though I bemoan scores like everyone else, I am really quite delighted if only one or two others kinda see what I saw, or better yet, see something even different. It's one of the things I truly like about photography - the fact that a single photo can say different things to different people.

My most overrated? That's easy - my Doll entry. I was flabbergasted, really. It's a nice clean simple shot. I'm pleased with it - don't get me wrong! - but significantly over 7? I was pretty suprised (albeit pleasantly so!) with my Iraq sunrise shot score, too, but hey, it IS a sunrise. Or sunset. One of the two.

What has changed most about DPC in the time you've been here... for better and/or worse?
I'd say there's more bitching and moaning, but in reality it's probably not that much more. I think it just gets a wee bit more annoying with time. Or age. Or both. I miss some of the folks who've left, of course, but am delighted when new contributors come along and make the most of the place, too.

Can I have a chocolate if I PM you my snail mail address?
I'm down to four offers. One person already responded but said she'll pass on the chocolate (though she may get some anyway - I have means of finding out an address that will work for her.) So if you want some, you'd better be one of the next four!

If you could go one place in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go and why?
Darn fine question. You know, I don't think the place matters. It's an adventure no matter where it is. I'm always up for any all-expense paid vacation. Come to think of it, I did get some interesting photographs on one of those, although it was more of a work-related trip than a vacation.

What was the happiest moment of your life?
If I try to pinpoint a happiest moment, would it negate happier moments in the future?

Do you take photos for challenges with the voters and scores in mind? Does the voters opinion influence the photo you capture and submit?
I take photos for challenges with the challenge in mind. I do on occasion try to select one with a thought towards whether or not voters might like it. But I shoot for me for the most part. One of the things I really like about DPChallenge is the weekly challenge topic bit. It gives me something to keep in mind when I head out with the camera. As most of you know, I don't do set-up shots well. Instead, I wander out and about, often planning weekend destinations just to go shoot, and I keep the challenge topics in mind. Sometimes I have a specific shot I'm after - whether I get it or not is another story entirely - but I mostly just go look and see what I can find. Usually the voters' opinion influences my perception of the photo after the first votes come in and I realize that yet again I've missed the mark, but thankfully I'm a slow learner.

When you replace a roll of toilet paper, do you have it hanging down away from the wall i.e. "over" or facing the wall i.e. "under"?
Definitely over. Though when I had a dog, he preferred it that way as well, since it meant he could, with great joy I'm very sure, unroll the entire roll while I wasn't home....

You've been FU'd! Lucky girl. Great answers. My fave is your response to the "happiest moment" question. Congrats!

I was *sure* you were going to answer "The day I slipped Bear's 10-22mm on my Canon at Bell's Neck Conservation area and saw the world as it could be, at last..."

I thought I was on the automatic "send chocolate" list after feeding her for several days, but I haven't received any yet, sigh... And I do SO love chocolate...

Well, that was a rather influential moment, I must say. The 10-22 is on my camera about as often as the 24-105. One of these days I'll even let another lens or two have a turn. :-)

And I currently only have two snail mail addresses.... Kelli, Barbara and Susan - send me your snail mail addresses!

Terrific answers, Deb.

And as you could tell, when I got to the Newark airport heading out for my life-changing/restoring trip to Honduras, I thought of you when I saw this....

....and smiled!

Ah... I have so many questions for this particular sucker.... but a little mystery is a good thing.

One Question.... Will this dove do? I have no pigeons to send to you?
Fun interveiw!

Great interview! Thanks for sharing it.

Btw, I never hiccup and cough at the same time. However, I have a delightful hiccup-burp combo that strikes, often in the morning. It always amuses me because it's a bit like a donkey's hee-haw.

Very nice interview and answers. Having spent the best part of two days in Amsterdam with Deb ... I will assure all of you that mostly you will see the back of her head while she is focussing elsewhere. I have many photos to prove it that I will post this weekend.

Hugz Deb.
