Instead of worrying about scores, anyone have suggestions to what I could have done to improve this photo. There were a few good comments but I'm sure people who voted lower could tell me where this photo could be improved.

To my eye, this is beautifully sharp & clear , excellent composition & framing, very well done in every way, under difficult shooting conditions...but something about the crop makes me feel like I need to step back a bit, even as I lean forward to admire the great detail. |

I didn't vote in this challenge, but your entry would've received a 9 from me. Sorry I can't be more help with a suggestion on how to improve it, I'd just like to be able to shoot something nearly as nicely :) |

Although this photo is technically good, there may be people who think is it uninteresting; ie no action. Also, some people may not like b&w. Other people may believe that by giving photos low scores, they make their photos look better. Personally, I like this, and being a new menber, I did not get to vote on this challenge. More important than the score is what YOU think about it. --Rick |

Well, you have the upper and lower borders, and there are some who hate them. So that could have affected your score downward (I suspect there is not an equal sized group who will specifically vote higher because they love a border treatment. Most probably just ignore it.)
I did a quick edit to show a different (not better) take: eliminated the borders, cropped in tighter from the left to eliminate some minor, but distracting elements--any little highlight in that dark area will draw the eye out to the left). I also cropped up a bit from the bottom to make the train more dominate and looming in the foreground. I tweeked the tone just a tiny bit warmer to see how it looks.
I voted your image an 8 in the challenge, so I only edited this to give you a view of how I might present it, and only because you asked the question in the first place. :-)
The "better" decision is solely yours to make, of course. |
