May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you wherever you go.

I am 50% Irish and a 100% Green Bay Packer Fan. I wear green practically every day. So I definately need to drink the green beer to make this day unique. Also cooking Corned Beef and Cabage for dinner.

Ha, well for the grumpy and the celebrating, lol...

Irish immigrants came to the Americas and to Australia in droves during the 1700's. There are many with actual Irish ties in both the US and in Australia.
As for not being under British rule (yet, was it?) (evil grin) I thought Ireland gained their independence from England back in the 1920's after you guys had control for hundreds or years...I'm drinkin' Guinness tonight and I don't care who knows about it!! LOL!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to one and all!!

Boy Mr. Simms, I have to tell you, usually I'm all up on your side in the things you say, but dumping on people because they have whatever reason they wish to be happy and celebratory? That's pretty low man!

I don't celebrate or follow the day myself, but it's March, it's the beginning of the end of a long winter, and if people want to be excited about something, who is anyone else to be a stick in the mud about that eh?
03/17/2009 03:46:44 PM · #37
Not me, that's for sure! It's finally sunny enough today to not wear a winter jacket! Everybody's in a good mood and we're going to have good drinks and good socializing tonight! I'm excited :)

ok... the time has arrived... let the drinking begin...

to start the festivities, I'll share with ya a little Ode to stout I wrote:

In depth of body
the dark of night
the lives of many
embraced by time
for in each pint
involves the lives
my Ancestors
my Brothers
my Irish Pride

Sláinte!

man - Simms is bitter. kinda like a good hoppy beer...

next week we'll celebrate St'Simms Day - maybe that'll cheerumup ?

FWIW - we don't buy any of those cheap plastic hats, or green beers, or wear green clothes, or wear pins or buttons... we make a real traditional irish meal to celebrate, and drink real irish brews...

i'm polish - so what the hell would i know ;)

but tonight we're having:

irish brown bread ( made it meself :)

beef and guinness meat pie.

and a dessert - i'm not sure of that - because one of the guests will be bringing it over.

Don`t get me wrong, I am not Anti-Irish, I like U2, I like Father Ted, I like Guiness - but I just don`t understand why people celebrate it in such a big way - espcially when a lot of them couldn`t even identify Ireland on a map of the world let alone have ties with it. I like the idea of St Simms`, we could just sit around being miserable and moaning in my honor.

I don't understand why people are sore about it. Being American doesn't mean you forget your roots and it doesn't mean that you are "just American". I've lived in California my whole life, and when people say where are you from, I say California...but when they ask what I am, I say German, Polish and English (with about 5% Irish mixed in there). Americans love celebrating all holidays for their cultural diversity...and any alcoholic representation of it, lol. Another example would be Cinco de Mayo. Now chill out, wear some green, find some 4-leaf clovers and down some green beer! Happy St. Patrick's Day :D

It's also noticeable - I speak here only of my own experience, naturally - that the Irish are perhaps the most intelligent people with regard to making a practical distinction between a person and his/her nationality. While an Irishman may - and with good reason - have problems with things that have been and are done to his country/countrymen and/or forebears by the British or the English or the Scots or any other country you might wish to mention, individuals hailing from those countries are treated as people and not as national entities. It's the politics and actions of administrations that are the problem and not the individual people who are subjects of the states. I don't think I know of any other nationality that is so adept and gracious at making that distinction.
Certainly, and again I speak from my own experience only, people from America, Australia and England who are, in fact, American, Australian or English, but who say they are Irish, do not have those skills.
But by all means go and get drunk, I'm sure you're up to that.

america is american. the american roots are mixed. you may be right, you may be wrong. but there are - no doubt - decendants of 'true' irish in america. you don't have to make a drunken stupor out of the day - you can celebrate with food ~!

don't celebrate the irish hertige that you have or don't have. no skin off my back...
