There has been a challenge for diptych/triptych photos and for landscapes, but never one for a panorama. Seems like a good idea for the spring when the weather gets warmer.

Sounds good! :-) Just wait until spring, 'cos it's cold like on the Poles here, and my only panorama is my ceiling 'cos I don't wanna get out of my bed (because of being tired and cold). :-)

I'd LOVE a panorama challenge; only problem is the 640px limit! I've tried resizing some of my panoramas for posting to my portfolio and they wind up looking dreadful. The real "wow factor" of a panorama is the incredible level of detail that's possible with multiple shots.

If we do have one let`s wait until this Spring.
It`s been colder than a witch`s titty in a brass bra on the shady side of an iceberg here lately. Too cold to concentrate enough on taking stitchable shots.

What Baegleboy said, and I'm 6 hours North of him. (Yes I know it's Summer in the other hemisphere).

For me, the real wow factor is when you print them out. I did a couple today on Epson panorama paper, about 23" wide and they look excellent...

Oh and please - if we do this - editing freedom!!! Almost impossible to do a decent pano without masks |

Absolutely. Automated stitiching programs still require some fine tuning, at the least. I think it would be a lot of fun even if we had to live with the 640px restriction. Maybe that could be increased for the challenge knowing that there probably would be less people submitting. So not a huge bandwidth difference.

I wish the size restrictions on this site were more along the lines of the //digitalphotocontest.com site. On that site they use a method of allowing photos to be displayed at 480ppi on their shortest side but not limited to how large they can be on the long side of the photograph. It would be awesome if DPChallenge could do something like this but maybe allow the size to be 640ppi on the shortest side.
In the past challenges I have wanted to use panoramic type crops from a single image but haven't because I knew I would take an awful beating by people saying the image was too small. Usually a good pano is at least double the short side on it's long side to give it that panoramic feel. I the world of the 640ppi on the long side rule your short side would be only 320ppi. :-( using the rules that //digitalphotocontest.com uses you could view the image at 480ppi x 960ppi. If DPChallenge were to allow the 640 on the short side this image would be viewed at 640ppi x 1280ppi.
I do think that a panoramic challenge is a great idea but would be mighty disappointing using the existing limitations.

I just resized one of mine and it turned out at 640x95 :(
I don't beleive theres any ppi restrictions, just px restrictions :p
I think photo's are plenty largenough for those of us stuck on dialup, a odd larger one, like panoramic with 480 on the short side would be ok, but if it was more than that, or commonplace, it would just take too long. |

You are right. I meant px and not ppi in all of those places. :-\

How about it SC? Maybe with some editing restrictions lifted? |

Considering that most panoramas are of landscapes winter, with it's cleaner cold air is the better time to shoot them. And the absence of leaves on the trees reveals sights hidden thru most of the year.
Would it be possible to allow pics wider than 640 on a one-time basis? |

I have tried a few panoramic images in the past, but they did not fair too well due to the size restriction. They were fun to do just the same.
And, there is no rule that says, they must all be horizontal. for example...

take a look at my panorama :) thats taken from four full-frame 5 megapixel images, so you can imagine the details in there.. in fact, you HAVE to imagine it, cuz you cant see a thing in this tiny 640 pixel wide, image :)

I think refracted's image says why a panorama challenge won't work. Great image, but not at 640

Right ... We'd all be under the same limitations ... some of those photos are pretty cool even at these small sizes. |

There was no "stitching" software used for these example images. Perhaps the Panoramic challenge should restrict the use of this sort of software? Not all users may have access to it. Although, I think that my ArcSoft Panorama Maker software came at no charge when I purchased one of my digital darkroom devices, flatbed scanner, film scanner, etc.
