For my birthday, my wife "gave" me some photography classes, and I'm currently looking into which ones would be good to take.
Our local arts center has some that sound interesting, for about $115. Betterphoto has a very broad selection by some pretty well-known photographers for roughly twice that.
Are the betterphoto classes that much better? (Understanding, of course, that you have no idea how good or bad the courses are at my arts center.) Any courses at betterphoto stand out? I'm looking at the ones by Peterson, since I like his books. Specifically, the Composition and Seeing Creatively ones are still open.
Any input would be appreciated. |

I've taken two of Bryan Peterson's classes and can highly recommend him! You'll learn so much! |

I did the "Understanding Exposure" course with Bryan Peterson and was very happy with it. I learnt a lot and got a big purdy certificate at the end of it :)

"Exposure" is what I'd like to start with, since it seems to be kind of an foundational class. Since it's full, though, I'm looking at the other two. I can always go back and take "Exposure" later.
Kaz, which two did you take? Any preference for one over the other? |

I've done both the learning to see creatively and the 'art of composition' courses with Bryan. I really enjoyed and was stretched by both courses - picked up things I haven't found in books and was 'forced' to try new things. I got a lot out of it but it really depends on how much you put in to it (like everything) You could easily just shoot the 3 requested images each week, upload them and move on and learn nothing.

Prices has gone up since I took Peterson's Exposure Class with Gary early last year. If budget permits, go for it. If not, just buy the photographer's book. Getting critique from known photographers is one of the advantages though. Good luck! |

I just tried to visit //www.betterphotos.com, but the page cannot be displayed. Is the site live or temporarily down?

Nice birthday gift!
I just finished Jim Zuckerman's course on Making Money with Your Photography. (He's also with Betterphoto.) It was great! Lots of inside info and individual critiques on your weekly photo assignments. Kind of pricey but worth it. Pretty time consuming, though. I tried to shoot new photos for each assignment (not a requirement, but preferred) and for me it was tough keeping up with five photo submissions each week.
This was my first class so I really can't compare it to the Artcenter's format but I liked the accessibility of the online course. |

I took "Understanding Exposure" and his "Marketing and Business" classes. Can't really compare them because those are very different subjects. I've also done a week-long workshop with him in Maine and beginning today I am enrolled in his first ever Year Long Stock Photography class. |
