Hi,
I was just wondering, I have this lens, Canon EF 50mm F 1.8 II Lens, but I hardly ever use it. I bought it with the intention of mainly using it with my extension tubes for macro work, but I've recently found that it is not such a good lens for that.
Is it a good portrait lens? I'm considering selling it unless there is a good use for it?? |

It's a good portrait lens and I also like it for still life work. Considered a great value for what it costs. Many folks here will recommend you spend 4x as much for the 50mm 1.4, however. I will admit it is not the most robust lens, though. I busted mine in December.

edit: oh I see you have the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, then you probably don't really need to keep the 50mm 1.8

I dont want to overstep my bounds, and maybe you need the money but if not, I think it would really cool to post a thread to give it away and hopefully only people who are really tight moneywise will put their name in the hat. you could draw a name and really make someones day!
just a thought since the lens sells for less than $100 new.... |

agreed
went through 3 50mm f/1.8's in the first month of DSLR ownership. it's alright with manual focus, but crap with AF.
I sold it to a friend who is more skilled with manual focus. Had to get the f/1.4 because of missing the bokeh. Never looked back.
I have since purchased a 50mm f/1.4 FD for macros. Mostly reverse lens stuff. I went FD because of the manual aperture adjustment.
Since you already have the f/1.4 USM, ditch the 1.8 and ditch it fast. |

Try it at high aperture openings (towards low f values like 1.8) in low light, and then tell us if the tack details on a creamy background dont get to you.
The 50mm 1.8 primes are the cheapest and fastest you can get to photography heaven in my opinion.
ETA: Not to mention:  Smardaz's picture of the little chap is one of my all time DPC favs.. and I just got one more from elsapo. I bought a Nikon copy the soon I got into Nikon too.
