The visa I am referring to is the one in my passport that allows me to live and work in Japan. Currently I'm on a "Spouse of a Japanese National" Visa. They last 3 years and then you have to renew them. When I first applied for it it was a bitch to get all the documents together. They needed proof I had no criminal record back home and that I wasn't married to anyone anywhere else. The list of documents my wife had to get from different government offices was really crazy too, but it got done. Second time around I figured I would just have to go in with my passport and my alien registration certificate. Since it seemed so easy, I decided to leave it till the last minute to do (Big mistake...I know). Well, now I'm hearing that they could ask for a whole load of documents as 'formalities'. We're still married, she could come and say "He's my husband." But you never know. I have till Friday to get things sorted. I go in tomorrow to see if my 'easy' way really will work (Some have said it would) and if not, then I take a week off work and figure out what to get.
This week is gonna be a stressful one...unless they accept my application form tomorrow in which case I will enter a challenge. |

I don̢۪t know, you look pretty suspicious to me. I can see it now:
"sir, we have this picture. what did you do with your wife?"
Good luck anyway.

Well, I went in with what I had and it wasn't enough. The guy was a dick about it too. I said "It says on the immigration bureau's website all I need is this and this." He went on to say that I was 'stupid' to assume something like that. He told me to go to information about what I need to bring. The guy at information said "Hand in what you have and send the rest by mail." I do that and as soon as the previous dick sees my name he looks for me in the crowd "McDonald san" shaking his head as I walk towards him. I explain to him what information had told me and he said "Nope. That's not what we do. Get the information FIRST then come in with it." I said "You should tell information not to give out advice that doesn't work here." I was angry by this point. I had been very passive the whole time and kind, but then I got a bit aggressive and he just turned away. A nice lady helped me out and told me where to get the stuff I needed and not to worry.

Sadly, that story sounds about par for the course when dealing with petty beaurocrats. |
