I have too much time on my hands. Watching an egret hunting in my lake, I wondered if they are edible. I haven't been able to find a recipe online, so I assume it just isn't done.

Same with Herons, darn it.

In the 15th century most fowls were eaten roasted.... but today I believe herons, egrets and the such are protected species?

They taste somewhere between a Whooping Crane, and a Spotted Owl...

But they just hang out like they are something special..... They need to be taught a lesson.

you can eat them if you can catch them. Least, that's my rule of thumb.

If you have too much time on your hands, try to see how close you can get to one. They are jumpy little things and usually it's no more than a few hundred yards.

You can eat 'em, but you might egret it...

From what I've read, they aren't really killed for their meat, but their feathers do make lovely hats (apparently they were hunted to endangerment around the 19th century for this)! Just don't kill any in New Zealand or Australia where they are a protected species.

Nothing to add to the convo but I think this qualifies as the most random question I've seen on DPC in a long while. ;)

Sorry, just chicken to see if you were laying attention. In stork contrast to other recent threads, this turkey's post quacked me up when I took a gander, and I didn't think I'd be robin Nobody by playing punguin. If I've ducked the rules against flyjacking (sometimes I frigate), just let out a shrike and I'll rhea write it.

Oh joy, oh raptor! My bad yolks got a response from Idnic. That's the Holy Quail for punguins (the celebrated booby prize). I shell stop now before this gets unpheasant. :-O

Right. They taste like fish and pond scum. In general, wading birds taste crappy, I am told. A lot like that dried shrimp in Oriental markets smells, is how they taste. So I am told. Don't ask me who told me, please.
