Most of you "old timers" who have been around for a year or so remember this picture. I found the owners of this vessel and sent them a copy. They in turn sent this to a guy from the boat. He wrote me a nice email back. Thought I'd share it with you guys.
Dear Bob,
I recently had forwarded from our home office a beautiful picture you
had taken in 2002 of the M/V John J. Boland. I have been aboard the
Boland as the Chief Engineer since 1999 and I also served in the capacity of First Assistant Engineer for 7 years prior to becoming the Permanent Chief Engineer aboard this vessel. I do not know where you live but if it is, in and around the Saginaw River area,if you would like a tour of this vessel just drop me your phone number and whenever we get in your area again I will call and you are welcome to come and tour the ship and lunch or dinner would be on me. If possible also, would you have any negatives available of the Boland picture, if so I would be very interested in acquiring one from you at your cost. Let me know if that is possible and include your phone number or contact number and I will be sure to contact you when in the area. Thanks Again
Jim Bertrand
Chief Engineer
M/V John J. Boland
So hopefully they're in the area soon. I've never been on a freighter, but I hear they feed you well.
This really made my day. Coincidentally, I took my first challenge picture one year ago today. (Easy to remember, it's my son's birthday)
Have a great day folks! - Bob

Very cool - you could 'pay' for dinner by giving them a big print, sounds like a fair exchange. Vary the size based on how stuffed you feel :) |

Actually I'm planning on that. I need to work on that picture a little though. The original picture was taken at 1280x960, so I don't know how big I can make that and have it still look like anything. But I'll definitely work on it for them. I know I can get at least an 8x10. Maybe I'll even go all out and get a coffee cup or some other little things just for kicks. Since I can't get him a negative, he'll have to settle for a print. Its a small price to pay if I get to go on the boat.

I'm going to work on it this weekend. If I start getting frustrated by it, I'll give you a shout. I had some prints made 20x30 and I was not happy with them. I've found there is a limit to how big I can make them with the 105% method, doing them the way I was doing them. It will be a good learning experience for me, if I can make it work. If not, I'll be in touch. Thanks for the offer John.

When you go aboard the M/V John J. Boland do remember that it is a SHIP. Only a rank landlubber would call it a BOAT.
You will find your visit aboard very enjoyable, as well as educational. Hope you will treat us to a snapshot of yourself and the Chief Engineer in the engineroom. |

We'll see about the snapshot... I was made to be behind the camera, not in front of it.

Here's an update to this story. To make a long story short, the Chief Engineer of M/V John J. Boland called me up when they were here and took me on a tour. I took a few pictures but my camera was acting up real bad this day (which prompted me to send it in to get repaired and I'm still waiting for it). The pictures are not that exciting I'm sorry to say. I was trying to take in everything Jim was telling me and even with camera in hand, did not take a lot of pictures. For those few who are interested, You can find them HERE.
My favorite is the View from the Pilot House.
Everyone have a safe and Happy Holiday Season - Bob

I missed this thread the first time around but it's a really nice story... how did you get on with making a large print?

Wonderful story. This is a great example of how photography can touch peoples' lives. Since it is a "ghot" ship, be sure to spit as you board. |

I got there about 2:30 so it was right between lunch and dinner. If I would've stayed, I might still be on the Great Lakes now since they were planning on leaving right before dinner. The kitchen smelled great though, with just baked pumpkin pies and rolls rising. So maybe next time I'll get lunch or dinner. I did make him a print, but I'll have to send it to him. I had about 3 hours from the time he called me until the time I boarded the vessel.
