So it's not just me that's seeing little white boxes with red Xs all over the place?????

I'm seeing all thumbnails perfectly fine.

It's a photography contest, right??? Not a title/grammar contest?

I vote for the image being able to hold its own in the challenge and the title, if there has to be one, just reinforcing the image the photograph presents.

But, that's my opinion.

I agree, titles should be 5 words or less. Maybe, a set number of characters or sumthin?? Another point, I was also under the impression this was a photography contest site but as of late, it appears we are both wrong. This is a "Learning Site". Maybe title description courses are offered and we are just not aware of it?? ;-)

The original idea behind the site was for it to be a place where the two of us and a couple of our friends could teach ourselves to be better photographers by giving each other a 'challenge' for the week.

Learning is the mission, contests are the format/mechanism.

I do not believe it is possible to always express a clear meaning in a single photograph alone. This does not make the photograph bad, it is just that some images can be taken several different ways, and if people get stuck on the wrong way then the photograph might not make sense in a given challenge. With a title this confusion can be reduced or eliminated.

Like many things it is a fine line, titles should not be an excuse for a bad photograph, however titles should not automatically make a photograph bad.

Art is "shoehorning"! ;-)

Correction: Art is The Shoehorner.

Nobody is saying ALL titles are bad, or that ANY photo without a title is good.

For me the BEST photos are the ones that just work, you see them and you think 'Yes, I see what (s)he's trying to do and they've achieved it', and these are the photos that win the ribbons. This is a learning site, and a good lesson is to take a photo that meets the challenge without having to use a long-winded title to explain why a photo has been entered.

The context lives within the art, or is at least present with just a little suggestion.

Can we please have a 'no titles' challenge as an experiment?

That's all well and good, just don't use the title to explain the image.

What exactly does that mean? If by "explaining the image" you mean that the title helps you to see a relationship between the topic and the image that your didn't see before, well, wasn't that relationship there all along, but only that you failed to see it? I don't see what's wrong with "Oh, now I get it" ...

No. That's not what I'm saying. It's titles that explain something that is not portrayed by the image just to make it fit the challenge. The image should not need a title to lead the viewer. The title should enhance the experience.

In future I'll remember that I can enter any photo in any challenge as long as I title it to fit. Good point.
