I eat calamari fairly often... and I know what it is!

Don't lie, I know at least a few of you didn't know and tried it

My son ( Jason_Cross) had a similar encounter with Rocky Mtn. Oysters, he was working in my parents bar one night and they served some up and he thought they were really good. We asked him if he was aware of what they were which he was not so we made sure he knew, his response was I don't care they were good......

Isn't it the same thing as calamari on the east coast?

If so, I eat it all the time. My son is addicted, but he's half italian so he has an excuse.

One time back in the late 70's we were playing for a huge barroom cowboy crowd, and our lead singer/guitar picker, who had just returned from a trip to Greece, announced:
"I'm so hungry I could eat the testicles off an octopus!" That was the highlight of the evening, and a big table clean up was in order when the laughter subsided. He was trying to say tenacles, but it didn't come out right>

I like tease any new waitress that I run across with an order that goes something like this:
" I would like a ham, ram, spam, beef, bear and buffalo club sandwich, with a side order of octopus arms and lizard legs in an armadillo half shell." I have been using it so long that my son and I can both say it correctly with a straight face. We get some great responses with that.

omg, I missed this before. I grew up in Colorado, where they're called Rocky Mountain Oysters. I've never heard of anybody eating them. I think they're just something we use to tease the tourists.

Nah, lots of people do eat them (as stated earlier), but I think a lot of it depends upon what community you're raised in. I can't see Denver residents being as interested or raised into the practice as more rural areas.

Deep fried is good, but I also just like those big ass rings, unfettered, with a bit of garlic butter.

It's alllll good and I love the little tentacles. mmmmm. But I mentioned it because I've heard of 3 people eating it, not knowing what they were, and then freaking out.

Sorry to keep resurrecting this thread, but I just got an e-mail from someone at Microsoft who says our testicle story is going to be featured in a link on the MSN web site (I have no reason to believe this isn't legit):

"Hi Freeds,
I'm the homepage editor at MSN.com and thought you'd like to know that we're featuring a Budget Travel story today on our homepage starting at 1:30 p.m. EST. It features your Rocky Mountain Oysters story! Send me an email and I shoot you a screenshot. What a funny story.... "

The MSN lady says it'll be part of a rotating graphic beginning at 12:30 that says, "Uh Oh, that wasn't fish! Travelers share their favorite tales." And it'll link to this article.
