You're too hard on yourself. Best for them to calibrate their monitors and view your image by selecting a vote of 7 or higher. Once they've done that, they should clearly see what you had intended. It is an error in perspective and not really with your image. ;-)

While mine was at 7.1 after about 10-15 votes, it dropped all day to a low of 6.3, but it is heading back up.

Bassbone...that's about the only 6 I've seen in the entire thread. Congrats. Mine had started near that area...but then dropped to a 5.4 and is now settling in at it's current score. |

I took a quick look through and figure there are a few high scores lurking in there - I liked many of the entries. I may comment some, but will not vote. |

You have rated 117 of 117 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.5726.
I handed out a large number of 6s (but also 5s. So much for my complaining about getting too many 5s in the Best of 2008 eh?), and a scattering of 7s. Only two 8s, and one 9. Few 4s. One 3.
Simply wasn't that impressed, and I think too many people got caught up in pure portraiture rather than the personality, but I tried to be 'benefit of the doubt'y

I'm just hoping i was in that scattering of 7's or two 8's....and even better if i was that one 9. But if i was one of the 4's or 3's we got issues lol. |

Exactly! I was thinking the challenge description was calling for environmental portraits, but most entries seem to be fairly straight forward portraits. |

Agreed! Loads of straight portraits and some of those not even showing much character either. For me I read it that the image - whether or not the environment contributed - spoke of who the character is and showed that they have character....
Score dropping - will join the ranks of mid 5.5's |

I guess I really don't understand where you read in the challenge description that it was calling for an environmental portrait. It says to show personality of a person in a photograph. |

Ditto. I saw a description that stated one was to try to capture a shot that showed a person's personality..period. Nothing was said on how to do that. A personality is not just his/her environment...it's THEM, themselves. Capturing environment within the picture works well if it aids in showing that personality in some way but, is not entirely necessary. Oftentimes, it's a person's hair, expressions, pose etc. that say the most. |

Thanks for the link to the discussion on this challenge idea. I guess since I don't read the threads much anymore I missed this. I just had a shot that seemed to fit what I saw from the title and challenge description and entered it....silly me! ;-)
fixed typos...

Ohhhhhh.......another one of those challenges where one had to read "The Discussion" rather than rely upon the challenge description??? ;-)) LOL |

Oh - I just realised now - having finished voting - that there are at least 3 interpretations of the challenge (lost in translation perhaps)...
Personality: as in having an amazing personality that shines through/successfully capturing the soul, interesting qualities of the subject.
Personality: almost as in what the person does for a living or how they lead their lives - the work they do. The titles tend to state what the subject is doing or "is". The environment plays a big part in these shots.
Personality: as in what kind of person is the subject: good, bad, happy, creative, stupid.... almost tending towards characteristics (hope I didn't inadvertently allude to any image there... unintended to be sure if I did.
This might explain why the scores are so spread out and why seemingly "on target" images are doing poorly.
Some challenges just have this huge possibility for misinterpretation and it always leads to a bit of disillusionment and frustration. |

My score is dropping too. I had a comment that i want to reply too, because it's off on their interpretation of the challenge, but i hate doing that if it might affect the score...but it may help other peoples score as well. |

Replying to a comment doesn't affect scores in any way, it generally only stops people from wanting to comment anymore.
An interpretation of a challenge is just that. It's neither right nor wrong. It's just different. Accept or ignore it and move on. |

haha...And i just did sorta the same thing that i was going to respond about.
I actually meant to say, based on their comment, I think they had the wrong or different definition of the personality trait (trying to avoid giving too much info away here).

Ah, well, in that case there's something about your photo that caused someone to respond they way they did. Again, no right and wrong, it's all in how we see. |
