I'll wait 'til you get home. I've so far successfully avoided the evil entity, on the presumption I'm entirely too old for Facebook or MySpace or whatever the kids are using these days. :-) |

Hmmm.... I have to admit at least three different people have asked me "Are you on Facebook?" I think the odd look I return indicates my unfamiliarity with the whatever it is. Perhaps I shall investigate... but imagine my chagrin if I were to create one of these Facebook things and no one came by? |

*Sigh* I hate Mondays. Esp this Monday.
Started off with a crap score on my Sand entry, which is pretty oob, I guess. Things didn't improve with the fire not wanting to start in the woodstove, which in turn made me late for work.
Where it quickly becomes obvious that the time has come for the 28-yr-old Clydesdale gelding to leave us. Hopping around on three legs, the degenerative arthritis in his right hind leg hock has caught up with him, won't put any weight on it at all. Won't touch his grain, didn't want to leave his stall, and even after putting 40 cc of bute (in 2 doses of 20 cc) into him, still won't set that foot down.
I told the owner the time has come; learn later that she and hubby have been fighting all weekend about whether or not to put him down.
Seems like my word was the final say, however. Either that or seeing me in tears - at his obvious level of pain, more than at seeing him go - made up her mind.
I don't doubt I'll be bawling my eyes out tomorrow too, but at least I'll be there when he goes to see his soul on its way. |

Ummm... OK - try this - go look at the beginning of this thread and see what the teams are and who is on which one. Draw a circle on the floor with indelible marker, write the teamnames, spill a soft drink and see which name collects the most liquid.
Or pick someone you know on one of the teams and shamelessly beg to join them. |

Oh, Susan, how very sad. :( But it does sound as if the poor guy is ready to move on. I feel for the owners and for you. Never an easy thing no matter how many times. Bless his heart, though, he has you to look out for him and do the right thing. Hugs! |

Thanks, Deb.
This old guy has had a good life. I took this picture of him as a potential entry for Horses this past summer. Just did a resize and some sharpening. The owners got him from a rescue facility when he was 17, he'd been a hitch horse (don't know who for) until he got too old or arthritic for that. He was used for light riding, mostly as a 'hubby horse'.
I'm just glad that he does want to go (I got the feeling, right before I left, that he was a little annoyed that he has to wait til tomorrow morning), and he's going before the weather gets any worse - midweek it's meant to drop to -30, and that kind of cold would be brutal on the old man, even with blankets on. We weren't even sure if he would survive last winter, but he did, and up until last week he acted fine. Thursday however he was noticeably stiff. Friday he was on 3 1/2 legs, meaning that he was still putting weight on the bad leg, but obviously limping.
I usually don't work the weekends, so it wasn't until I saw him this morning and the sheer agony in his eyes, coupled with a complete lack of interest in food, and that bad leg being kept carefully off the ground, that I knew it was time to tell the owner that it's time for him to go.

Susan, your care for the animals you look after is so obvious. Hope tomorrow goes as well as it can, and your support for the old guy helps him at his end. I'll be thinking of you. |

snaffles Susan, my heart goes out to you and the owners, it's never an easy decision even when you know it's the right thing to do.
Let the tears flow and then relax with a nice bottle of wine and some cheese in front of your new wood stove and let the puring of your cats and the crackle of the fire sooth you after
which you should take a nice warm bath in a candle lit roof with your favorite music playing softly in the background.
I know this will not help with all the pain of your loss but I would hope it would bring you some level of comfort.
All the best to you and the owners, you'll be in my thoughts tonight and tomorrow.

Big hugs Susan. It's such an emotional push/pull between knowing that it has to be done, and then not actually wanting to have to put them down. More hugs. |
