Man, I'm gonna miss that SOB. Worthy Rant opponent and nice guy! |

Great photographer. (Hope I didn't annoy him with nitpicking on last rant; could be he is dealing with a sense of the strange reality of on-line communications if his latest blog is anything to go by - something I often feel - its strangeness - and which I manage not to deal with). |

I too, will miss Louis. His firm, yet controlled arguments in favor of issues he felt strongly about were always helpful.

Yet another reason to kill the rant forum on the site and keep it strictly for photography.

... If Louis was here I would hazard a guess that he would be the first to disagree with you.

I hope you see the irony in your response..........he isnt here because of rant......and yet you say if he was here he would disagree.

It is conceivable that Louis might have left for the reason you state, but I seriously doubt he would support your view that the site be kept strictly for photography.

When zeuszen posted the link where we might find him, I followed through and have had several conversations with Louis.
Now, I do have Rant turned off and only go there to keep track of one thread in it; the one having to do with Gay Rights. In that discussion, I've always found his remarks to be considerate, well reasoned and interesting reading.
I now find that Louis has been banned from the Rant Forums, apparently without appeal, and, threfore, he decided to leave DPC completely.
While I do not, and probably never will, know the precise reasons for this drastic action, it just seems important that this information becomes public.

That frosts me...then there should be many banned from the Rant forum...without appeal if this was the case for Louis! |

More importantly, WHY was he banned? By whom? As a community, are we privy to such information?
eta - SC inquiry submitted. I asked that a response be posted here... though that doesn't guarantee one will be provided.

Methinks that a tiny little pandora's box, somewhere, just cracked open a bit. |

This articulates my own sentiments very well. I know I'll miss his clear light in the common chiaroscuro. |

I'm kind of wondering if there wasn't a general round of bans in Rant though, as it has been quieter than usual

This is sad and strange. It is hard to imagine Louis venturing beyond the pale in any rant, though we all have our boiling points, but that is what rants are for, no?
As for rants being quieter than usual, most of us have been dealing with cold and snow and whatever the big holiday brings or does not bring. As well, a person can just run out of rant. |

This news saddens me as well. He is an accomplished photographer and an intelligent and skilled debater. I'll most certainly miss his contributions to this site. :( |

I think its fair to know what caused Louis to be banned from forum posting for one month: for violating posting rules. He chose to leave when we advised him that we did review his request for us to reconsider and found that the points he was relying on were not valid when viewed in the greater context. I am sorry that I cannot provide more detail than that, but it was only a one month suspension and he chose to remove himself from here. He is, of course, always welcome back as is any user who choses to close their account.
edit: colon added for clarity

??? (thank you for responding so quickly Frisca, but what did he DO?)
No offense intended - its just that he's always been polite & well written. By comparison, several of us are overdue for banning! :) :) :)

he violated forum rule 14: Above all, play nice. Be aware that the above rules are not all-inclusive. If you stir up trouble to prove a point, or engage in a pattern of disruptive behavior, we will address your actions, even if those actions do not violate any specific rule listed here. We will also handle any issues not specifically covered by the rules on a case by case basis.
In the interests of privacy, that is all I am willing to post at this time.

Well, Louis has left the site and the matter is apparently closed.
This is so completely out of character for this skilled debater.
While I do understand that these things are between the people involved,
I do wonder if there is a terrible mistake in here someplace.

Yes, the matter of the forum suspension is closed. As was stated earlier, if Louis would like to reverse his request to deactivate his account he is welcome to do so at any time.
As to the underlying reasons for (or the length of) the suspension -- there was no mistake. |

I was going to let this die, but I have to add my own little mini-rant. This is a complete lose/lose situation. No one benefits. No one wins. Not only has Doc lost his primary debate-skilled discourse partner, the rest of us have lost a pretty darn cool portfolio to view and some have lost outstanding support for portrait work. I can't see how any benefit is derived from this whole situation. Kinda bums me out. I don't have any useful advice to offer, I guess. Just wanted to say my piece. Colleen put it pretty eloquently. |
