I had NADA for either of the open challenges, but I'm on a DPCO team.
They'll regret that!
Oh, well......there's always next week. |

Greetings, guys! Don't let Sara tell you I'm trying to kill her - I'm not. But she does have a nasty cold. So today we did a slow roll through the Vatican Museum. A very overwhelming kind of place. I honestly think it should be taken in small doses over an extended period of time. Just too much to see all at once. Did I mention overwhelming? The Sistine Chapel was almost a disappointment of sorts. Mostly because it's just a big room with way cool paintings all over it - that part is very good - but also a whole crowd of rather rude individuals who weren't especially quiet. And one or two still using the flash on their P&S's when NO photography is permitted there. I do have one covert shot somewhere, but I can assure you I didn't use flash.
Then we took the afternoon off, so Miss Sara could nap and I could sort through the myriad of shots I have. Deleted a lot, mind you, and STILL have a ton to go through. Nothing earth-shattering, but nice trip photos.
Late this afternoon we visited Argentine Square, which is NOT named for the country, but for the element of silver. Long story and I'd get it wrong if I tried to tell it. But there's a block's worth of ruins uncovered (the city of Rome has "risen" at least a couple of floors worth over the millenia), including one of the possible locations they think Caesar (Julius) was killed. It's also a cat shelter - neat place to visit and probably not in many guide books.
We have found a wonderful restaurant - if you find yourself in Rome, visit zigaetana, near Vatican City - address available upon request.
And last, but not least, a few snapshots. I pretty much had the 10-22 on most of the day, so you'll have to wait for Sara to feel better, sort her pics, and edit a few to see some less-cluttered perspectives.
More little bits of story included with the pictures.

Amazing shots, Deb! Wish I were there too eating yummy Italian food and shooting with a couple of Tsers...hope Sara feels better soon. And I heard about that cat sanctuary too, though didn't know there was meant to be a connection to Julius Caesar.
Have fun! |

At the cat shelter in the ruins of Argentine Square. Neat place. We learned that clipping the right ear tip of the cat is a way to indicate it has been neutered/sterilized. Much easier to tell if a feral cat is "fixed" if you don't have to catch it and check for a tattoo. |

Interesting idea. Guess the cats don't mind! |

In the Deb book of pictures, this has it all: a tourist attraction (Spanish Steps), tourists, tourists taking pictures, odd distortion from the wide angle lens, WAY too much going on, and of course, pigeons. Doesn't get any better than this.
Sara has unselfishly shared her cold with me - by tomorrow I should be delightfully miserable just in time to fly home. We did visit St Peter's Basillica today - truly a wonderful place. Should you only have two days in Rome, do St Peter's and the Forum.
Sara has some wonderful shots from this morning's foray. Mine literally pale in comparison. In fact, when I get home I'll do some side-by-side comparisons where we were both shooting the same lens. Either I cannot figure out how to focus correctly or my camera has a slight tendency to not quite get there. Or her 40D is just plain better than my 30D. (Open to ideas on that.) Then there's that remote possibility that she's simply way better at handling a camera than I am. OK, so that possibility has a high probability....
Anyway, other than colds, it's been a delightful excursion. Lots of takeaways, but the most important - NEVER EVER drive in Rome. Seriously. There are no lanes painted in most cases - that's because no one would use them if there were. Most intersections are "uncontrolled" - quite literally. As a pedestrian, find a crosswalk and just go (unless it has a light - then wait for the Green Man). Believe it or not, the cars and scooters will stop. Or they have so far.... People park everywhere. And I mean everywhere. And they park within inches of each other, often two deep in places you're quite sure that isn't a good thing. And yet the buses manage to get through, which amazes me.
More pictures from me after I get home and can go through them. And more from Sara as well. |

I didn't like St. Peter's. Too garish. You didn't do my list, did you? Tsk tsk tsk. |

We did most of the list except figuring out which Santa Maria church to visit - there are about a dozen of them. :-)
See, now I thought the Vatican Museum a bit garish at times. St Peter's I liked more for the crowd (which wasn't very big, I'm guessing, compared to summer), watching people in the square, the immensity of the place, and the fact I did climb the kazillion steps to get to the top of the cuppola. That, and it's about three blocks from our hotel. |

Bad girl! Sorry to hear you're on punishment! Hey, my mom is doing better. They did the surgery on her leg and it went well. She has to stay in the hospital in rehab for another week or two and then start the radiation on the first of Dec. I've seen enough snow up here already! It's going to be a long winter! |

I'm glad it went well!! She'll be better before you know it! We had snow here today (just some quick showers), nothing stuck. The cold really, really, really sucks though! |

Ah, you wussies, it's waayyyyy colder up here!
Terry, so glad your mom's doing well; Kelli, no more borders for awhile!
Picked up my calendars from print shop, thrilled with how they turned out. Last year's were way too dark cause I didn't proof calendars in person, and didn't have a monitor calibrator. Oh yeah mebbe I take better pix now too despite myself :-) |
