Once again I thought I might have a PB or something to put on my front page. Once again I was wrong. Sitting at 5.6x, and my only comment has me baffled.

I hate when voters vote that way... I mean, they can vote however they like, but it seems the images should not be "ranked" against the other photos in the challenge, but rated as the photos itself.

But we always get people here saying they give the first place a 10, second place a 9, etc...

Rate the photo and let the totals aggregate as they will.

This is soooo strange... Two entries in a row, I started with 4.2 then it went up to 5.+ other one doing better but what is it... there are new "first voting trolls" just appeared in DPC? That's so funny and sick at the same time :/ I don't think none of the images should go down to 4.2, they are not my worse photos I took :\

Kind of disappointed so far, but I hope it goes up through the week. This is my 3rd challenge and I think this is the best picture I have submitted yet, so I was hoping for a higher score than my 2 previous challenges.

Hoping for some comments as well.

I saw a post in earlier of someone receiving a 1....has anybody else noticed a 1 vote given to them today...probably within the last hour or so?

Got a 2 within that time frame. The people who vote like that never leave comments to explain the low votes.

I just got 2 1s since my last check.

I see that a lot... where you get a batch, and it truly makes me think someone has multiple accounts for trolling purposes.

Yep I got a 1 and a 2 followed by 3x 7s in a row, just makes me so mad.... time to turn off scores again.

A bit annoyed with scoring today....Down to 5.1 something.

And this is not a case of DNMC....It's a good thing the image is far better than the score - good enough to go on the wall this afternoon...

There are quite a few very good images this time. Ideal voting considers each image individually (technical/creativity/impact/etc). When that is the basis of voting, your image can do well whatever the current competition. Doing so requires some sort of internal scale of bad to good.

However,that is not easy to do consistently. Some members approach voting as an opportunity to rank images against each other within a given challenge. When that happens your image can suffer a lower score just because more top end images have been entered than usual and are occupying the upper end of the voting scale. The rules don't say there is anything wrong with this, so take it into account when figuring out what your score means.

My experience is that it helps to have a thick skin, and also to realize that your own assessment of your image has value. Then take what you can from constructive comments and learn as much as possible from looking carefully at all the other images.

I am sure you are going to say "what?" but I don't know what USM stands for. Could you clarify?

Unsharp Mask. Used for sharpening an image. Sometimes if you do it too much it gives the edges of the subject a jagged look.

What? ;-)

Yes, USM = Unsharpen Mask and in cases where light meets dark it leaves a bright, glowing ring. Not a good addition to your photos.
