:-) how about a challenge for all of us non-ribboning under-dogs too? :-) since there is a challenge for the big-time ribboners ;) why not give us an opportunity against ourselves (not against those who already have ribbons) u know? kind of an exclusive "only if you don't have a ribbon" kind of challenge free study? :-)

The sad thing is that when it is over we will have to say good-bye to three of our fellow underdogs as they enter the cold embrace of the DPC elite - ribbon winners.
I'm not sure I have the stomach to watch that happen...
Just kidding. I'm in! |

The problem then becomes it turns into another typical challenge as (just a guess) 80% are already non-ribboners such as myself. I like the idea though. Maybe a challenge where non-ribboners enter and ribbon winners judge? It's probably been suggested before though.

On one hand.... it does get frustrating when the same people seem to win all the time.... and rightfully so since their photos are usually stellar....
On the other hand.... it encourages you to try harder to reach that level. It keeps the bar high...

When I win I want it to be against the best, not watered down by being the best of the mediocre :) |

ditto....my local camera club just did that same sort of thing....twice a year all non-ribbon-winners, could compete in a class by itself.
My thoughts were 'why would I want THAT ribbon?'
So here I just dream of a higher score... |

wouldnt it be nice and refreshing though, to know all 3 ribboners (is that a word?) will be new ribbon winners? |

An under-dog challenge would be unfairly biased towards those with tall dogs, and it would only be a matter of time before the cries were heard for under-cat, under-fish and under-pants challenges. |

What about the Creatives, the Dark Horses, the Lame Ducks, the Point'n'Shooters, & the Wannabes? |

Well, we are a society that loves to celebrate mediocrity.
I'm with the commenter above me. Why have a challenge just for people that haven't won anything yet? Just so we can have a few new people feel better about themselves?
I dunno, I just find it a bit of a pampering sort of idea. I'd also question the validity of such a ribbon. Second-class as they say. |

They're all underdog challenges. I have no better chance of winning a ribbon than the next guy. It's all about putting all the winning elements together for each challenge... what those elements are? Hard to say, but if you study the winners of past and look at the quality of work they turn out, and try to achieve the same level, anyone can win a ribbon.
Spend some time on your shot, get it right in the camera, post process it so that it enhances, not distracts from your image, post it, and hope for the best.

isn't the current challenge just pampering the "masters"? |

If you like numbers and have a lot of time to study the challenge results, then you can look at each phtog's profile, and eliminate the previous ribbon winners and recalculate the challenge results. That would be about the same as what the OP suggested.

Since I'm a new winner of a brown ribbon... how about a challenge with only the "brownie" winners?

You have it wrong... it's not the same people winning all the time. It's the same people losing all the time, which by default leaves only the few to get the ribbons. In other words, the winners are out numbered 100 to 1, sometimes more.
;D

It's rewarding those that did well. There's a difference. |

The interesting thing is that someone in the Masters Challenge will get the Brown Ribbon. Winners are only made possible by the existence (& willingness) of loosers. |

Ah, the curse of 1 ribbon. Too few for the masters and too many for an under-dog. :P |
