It's probably just a matter of percentages.
150 entries in a normal challenge is easier for people to go, "yes, I can vote 150 times". So you get more voters voting the maximum.
400 - 500 entries in a Free Study makes people say, "Wow, that's a lot, I usually vote around 150 times, so I'll just vote 150 times." So they do. But that's only 150 out of 500. With the usual number of voters only voting around 150 times, and everyone having random placements, you're going to see a significant drop-off in vote numbers.
At least, that's how I see it. I'm probably horribly wrong. |

A bit bummed tonight. I really thought my Money shot would do better than it did, and now my FS has dropped below the 6.xxx too. :( The FS I thought for sure would score nicely into the 6's. To top it all off, still no comment from  K10DGuy - a big reason why I entered this FS. oh well...there are two people who fav'd this which makes me feel good.

I'm very proud. I know in a free study, that is not likely high enough to score a ribbon, but for me, having a score over 7 and 6 favorites is its own reward :) And this does happen to be what I think is my favorite photo that I may have ever taken.
