I didn't enter this challenge but I am relatively new to DPC and this is my first full month of voting/participating in other challenges and then voting in the free study and I noticed a lot of shots that seemed to be outtakes from previous challenges, some were very obvious from challenges that closed already and others you had to imagine their upcoming abandoned/smoke/mirrors entry was going to be very similar. Is that normal?

Yep, people often put their good outtakes in the free study, I see nothing wrong with it.

It seems as if most, but not all, of the submissions have been over-saturated. Additionally, the photos look as if they were taken with P&S cameras with less than premium lenses. That said, I did give several 10s and some other good scores.

WTG Karen! However, I have to tell you that my score is just slightly better but still in that dreaded 6.9 - 7.15 range which for me has been bad luck. I've had 8 entries finish in that range with no ribbons and a 7th place average finish. I'm guessing this challenge won't be any different.
