Yesterday we spent many hours driving and walking around Mt Rainier. Lovely weather, lovely colors, but the only wildlife we saw were two chipmunks racing across the road :-(

Dear SC and/or senior members, can you please help in clarifying this confusion by voting [1], [2], or [3]:

[1] I believe a zoo animal meets this challenge.
[2] I DO NOT believe a zoo animal meets this challenge. But I will NOT rate it low.
[3] I DO NOT believe a zoo animal meets this challenge. I will call it a DNMC, AND will rate it low.

This will help a lot of people.

Thank you in advance!!!

ETA: Hmmm.. this silence tells me I touched a sensitive topic? :-)

This has been gone over many times in the past. Look at the results of the past three wildlife challenges. The answer would be a great shot of a non-domesticated animal that appears to be in a natural environment will ribbon. The direct answer to your question is likley 1 & 2.

Why, Melethia, all you did was obey the signs that no doubt said: "Don't feed the (not so)wildlife"

So no one wants to address the question of what portions of the animal Kingdom are considered wildlife and which arent. I took some great in the wild shots of an animal that is not a mammal, a bird or a reptile. Should I not even bother to enter them?

For my local camera club, for wildlife photography, not only must the subject be a non-domestic animal, there cannot be any evidence of the "hand of man". What that means is that if I take a picture of a deer in a field, the field better not be cultivated, the shot shouldn't include any fences or buildings in the background etc.

That being said, if I take a shot at the zoo where there's no evidence of enclosures etc. and it looks like a natural habitat? Go for it.

As for whether it needs to be a mammal, bird or reptile? (or fish for that matter). Shellfish are animals and are definitely not domesticated. They are just...um...boring. However, if they are photographed well? Give it a try I say. Why not?

Not sure what the sign said. But the little one was laughing at me.

I was gonna go for a walk today in the woods to see if I could see bunnies or even a fox but it was raining cats and dogs the entire day, plus with the fierce wind it was very definitely not camera-friendly.

So are pictures of insects completely out then? They're wildlife to me but I'm getting the feeling nobody else agrees.

A shot of cats and dogs raining down probably would have done well, even though they're normally considered domesticated animals.

You just have to be careful not to drop your camera in a poodle.

(Sorry... I just got up... haven't had coffee yet...)

I would guess any animal which you cannot see and touch in day to day life would do.. at least for me. So even a hummingbird (you cant touch it usually).. or an ape (that you dont see walking around on the streets on a leash) or even an insect/fly (not a housefly) that is hard to find usually will do good for me as a critic as long as it is a well taken picture with no signs of you drugging the subject to pose them between soft lights and umbrellas;-)

Personally, I'm going to vote anything that grabs my attention high. This includes unconventional takes on the term "wildlife"

See now I'm stuck as I was thinking a Suicide Girl model prowling the streets with a diamond encrusted leash and a tight leopard skin leotard, it looks like Prash would vote me down but K10DGuy might give me high marks ;)

Back to the drawing board I guess haha

You know what, I had some very similar ideas but felt I was pushing DNMC territory just a wee bit too much, hehe.

Eheheheh...for this one idea, I would have made an exception.. but dont know how much a single 10 score would help you ;-)

Well, I'm in, though I'm not completely satisfied with it. I have shots from that day that *I* like better but aren't as DPC-friendly. I'll have to put a few in my portfolio I guess (after the challenge, of course).

"non-domesticated mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians living in a natural environment."

I don't think insects will 'fly' (pardon the pun, I couldn't resist) with the challenge description. Insects are conspicuously missing.

I'm stuck in the lucky situation of having an 'OOOOOOHHH' and an 'Awwwww' shot to choose from. Oh so difficult!!!

I'd pick the OOOOOHHH shot instead of the Awwwww shots as they normally do better here on DPC.

No fair. All I had to choose from was a "meh" shot and a "hrmm" shot.

I chose the "hrmm"

Mine's a "bleh."
