You'd think with the comparison in comments my score would be lower than our new member...

If that score is real, that is some sweet, fav action! I think the top scores will be quite high.

I just want to add.... I have been playing for 5 years now and I have 2 placed images. Otherwise, I get mostly crappy scores. Thing is, I have owned my photography business for 4 years and I recently opened another specialty photo business on the side.... but, I have had my very best portraits entered in challenges and they have bombed! As a matter of fact, my entry for one of the challenges was shot for my side business... my clients were so happy with the photo that they are using it in promoting their business... but on DPC, I'm only getting a 5.97!

People here tend to be very critical. I do this as a profession, and I still get horrible scores, even if my clients are more than thrilled.

Dunno why? Just is that way! lol

You have to remember that, outside of stock photography, a photography business caters to very individual clients. Your portraits are being shot for one person, or one group of people, and are tailored for that. On DPC, we're trying to reach an unbelievably wide demographic with just one shot. A portrait has to have such an amazing amount of mass appeal to do well here, that it generally cannot be one that has been tailored to a specific client. They have to fall more into the realm of stock portraiture, which is far harder to do in most cases (unless one has been gifted with a natural talent to do such). So that's why some of our favorite/best works can be so lukewarmly received here.

I think that the statement made above (bolded, highlighted) sincerely states the real fact about what this site is all about and perhaps, why some photographers are going to be batting their heads against figurative walls in here.

In order to do well in DPC, one has to peg themselves pretty squarely into the realm of "stock photography". Anything outside of that realm, anything truly "artistic" in nature is not going to do well no matter how successfully it's done. Those in here to have found "The Look" and stick by it will amass the ribbons and higher scores. However, one has to ask oneself at the outset if they are willing to compromise their artistic sides for "stock-style, technically perfect" shots.

The fact that N's shots are "tailored" to her clients and makes her clients extremely happy, puts money into her pockets. Her work is also framed and hung on walls all over the place. If she (or, anyone else for that matter) changes her style to suit DPC tastes, she risks losing the "art" of her own style and therefore, that money in her pocket.

I'm wondering for those who have been successful in capturing the higher scores in DPC challenges and won ribbons galore, how many have succeeded in getting their photographs to make them a living like NS has done with her photography business? Just a curiosity.

I am not a professional or anything, but I have found that when you take pictures for people who are not photographers, you know... for regular people who may not even have a camera, they are VERY easy to please... if you are taking a portrait if them, all they care is that they look good... they don't really care much about the technical aspects of the picture... whether the lighting was right, or if the saturation is too low or if the focus is a tad off or it's not sharp enough...

On this website, your "clients" ARE photographers... and most of them care more about the technical aspects rather then whether the person looks good or not... and also in most cases lots of the voters also entered the challenge so they are even more critical of your pic

Let me ask something. If you were to buy a painting for your home, would you care how well received it was by "The Art Community"? Would it be worth less to you if it wasn't considered a "technically perfect" painting but, you loved the painting?

I admire the photographers in here who aspire and strive to please other photographers in here, but how many photographers buy other photographer's work? Do the praises of other photographers in here put a meal on your table like N's clients are doing for her?

Just a thought and a question that I'd like to hear your opinions on.

You know, I posted a shot done by a very well known professional photography firm (unknown by those who commented) on a thread in here one day and asked people's opinions. No one who commented knew that it was done by a professional photography firm or who it was done by for that matter. That photo was torn to shreds! I mean literally torn from stem to stern. What is that saying about the type of critiques that go on in here?! :-0

THANK YOU for bringing up an excellent example and point!!! HUGS to you!

What that is saying is that DPC has far more people taking a critical interest in it than it had been within the relative confines of the clientele that it was shot for.

I think the key here lays in the phrase "critical interest". :)

Have you ever really looked at some of the ribbon winning entries' during and post challenge comments and looked at the differences between them? Not always, but a good portion of the time, the comments made during challenge/voting periods tend to be rather critical. Post challenge, once a ribbon has been won, all of a sudden, it's as though everyone sees VALUE in that shot and praises about it are written galore about it being such a wonderful shot. Very few, post challenge will stick out their necks to say something like, "I think that you could have made this better by....(fill in the blank here)" Once it has won a ribbon, it is deemed "wonderful". Ever think about that? I have.

In saying that, I am making the point that very often, voters judge a photo harshly until it is deemed by the rest of the community as "marvelous, wonderful, great, fantastic". Suddenly, the criticism stops. Why? I'm sure many of the voters disagree with a lot of the ribbon winning choices. But, somehow, once it is deemed a winner, the criticisms stop and beauty is found in every pixel of those shots. Has that not then, become "an audience" just as much as a photographer pleasing their clientel?

Criticism in here goes on because everyone fancies themselves able to judge correctly and usually, harshly...until, the community as a whole has deemed that it is a winner. Suddenly, it feels silly or foolish to criticise is any further and the power that goes along with the ability to critique has been taken away by that ribbon and perhaps, the frowns of those who are now adoring that photo.

Does the ribbon winning suddenly make it perfect? Why doesn't the criticism go on after that?

Edit to ask....how many times have we all critiqued a shot more harshly and given it a lower score, only to find it a winner and gone on to congratulate and praise the winning photographer afterwards (if we haven't already commented during voting)???

That's a fantastic question, and one to bring up again in a new thread, perhaps with examples. I know every time I think about sticking to a more critical comment I've made after an image has done really well, I'll not follow up on it in fear of the masses smothering me, so that's probably a part of your answer. Fear of the masses.

I will take it! It's better than I thought I would do. Although, the one I submitted was not how I edited it for myself, and I'm not happy with my entry. I plan on using mine to make a photo book of different fairytales. So, I can't wait until the challenge is over so I can share my version of it! :) I knew the viewers would knock me down for "over neat imaging" my photo... when in reality, I hand painted it in PS.

Oh well! I love my comments and my score.

Good dose of comments coming along on that one!

Hey, I'm just your average, gullible geek...you got me on the first read through! Why? It seemed reasonable! Jason's shots are usually worth of a high score despite the content of the thread above.

You have rated 82 of 83 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 82 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.0122.

In My opinion a lot of thought was put into creating photos of a past era....well done all.
