Try Salvation Army and similar thrift stores for clothing, props and scraps of cloth ... you'd be amazed at what you can find and for very little $$!

Ummm...well it is Thanskgiving. I would call or email them's that your visiting and explain your dilemma and ask them to pretty please loan you either $10 apiece, or the chance to rummage through whatever suitable props they might have. There are lots of Grimm stories out there! Good luck!

ETA: lightbulb moment - If you're going to a major city like TO, Montreal, Vancouver - they always have vintage stores. And they know people are looking for cool stuff. If there's time, maybe offer to do a few shots for them in exchange for use of props/clothes (in-store of course!)? Of course this is kinda a hit and miss method but you may get lucky!

When I suggested this topic I had a studio, props galore, people who c/would participate. Unfortunately now all I have is the camera and lights.

Damn! I need my studio back. Not having it, as crappy as I am, is holding me back! ;) (yeah, right!)

Well, I wouldn't trade my wife even for a virtual ribbon and that is where all my space has gone. So...oh well. This is one challenge I will definitely vote/comment on 100%.

The Grimm tales were one of the few books I had as a kid that was mine and mine alone. I read and re-read them and was terrified every time. As I got older I still read them but they terrified me less. I just wanted to 'see' them. I would visualize the scenes in my mind and wonder if the movie in my mind would do them justice. So I guess this is my version of realizing that. I suppose what I was thinking when I suggested this was 'still shots' from the actual tales. As if they were 'happening' and you just also 'happened' to be there with your camera.

NOTE: I know, the reference to the movie in the linked post. Well, that was the catalyst, I suppose, for posting the topic. It seems when I was watching it, I thought that the "DPC community would portray that much differently" as well as "as a still that would score crappy on DPC" and compared that to the vision I have in my mind's eye of the tales. I wish I could do with my camera what I can do with my mind.

Great ideas! However, the road trip isn't until the 9th :) I was being mostly sarcastic anyway hehe. I'd already decided to skip this one. I like looking at creative set-up shots. I don't like doing them.

I think that only the most famous fairytales will be used by the members

Well, I'm going to use one I'd never heard of before, because I happen to have a suitable prop. ;-)

Any truth to the rumored Shannon sightings related to this challenge?

You gave up your studio space for your wife??? Wow that is love. Congrats to you.

When I was young I had a book of Fifty Grimm's Fairy Tales, which I read cover-to-cover more than once. Some of them are quite gruesome. Of course, "fairy tales" is an unfortunate appellation. If I remember correctly they are called "hearth tales" elsewhere -- a much better name!

Voters will probably approve of the familiar. I have an idea based on a scene from one of my favorite tales, but the title of the tale alone won't seem to match the image. One would have to know the story or take it on faith.

Are we allowed to go a bit off course as long as characters from the story are the main subject? And can we change the title to fit our pic? or does it have to be the original name of the tale? I shot mine, I just don't want to have my village burnt down due to traveling too far off the beaten path. LOL

I would say no. From the Challenge Description
The title of your entry should be the title of the tale it is based on.

Im going for one that many people probably wont have heard of. I hope that for the more obscure titles people will Wiki it before voting - i know I will be for others.

Dang. I just noticed. Do we really have to use the title of the story for our title? How boring.

I fully agree! Mine makes no sense without the title I gave it. The title of the tale I chose, doesn't fit. I mean it does, obviously. But the title is what makes my entry! *ugh*

I agree....unless the voter knows the said fairytale, that won't be able to connect the image to the title...we should be allowed to put our own title BUT include the fairy tale name in brackets to connect it all together.

I don't think you'd be marked down for that. Speaking strictly for myself of course! ;)

I just submitted my shot... luckily the name of the story works with the shot...

This had crossed my mind as well...

I'd be willing to guess there will be lots of Little Red Riding Hood's. The dilemma is between shooting yet another shot of tales people know and the obscure ones people won't take the time to Wiki before voting that they don't get it.
10/04/2008 10:59:53 AM · #48
People will know my tale by looking at it, which is good. But I need to change a few words in the title to make sense. *ugh*

Oh well. I will get voted down anyways! lol I usually do hahaha
