A small propane stove can sometimes save the day when the power is off too. Rope or wire for a clothes line, and clothes pins are good things to have. It's sort of late for shopping, but you may want to get extra propane fuel if you have a camp stove and or a lantern that uses it.
A small 12 volt DC to 120 volt AC inverter (Black&Decker, Walmart and other stores about $20) will allow you to charge your camera batteries and computer from your car when power is out. Any of the larger ones will run the new CFL bulbs in a table lamp if you run an extension cord to the car, but be careful about running the battery down with it. The 400 watt and up sizes will run a television as well.
We just missed this one here in S Florida. They had it pointed at us before it hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic. My heart goes out to all of you Texans.

Houstonians, this is probably the least of your worries right now but perhaps you should send in your raw files for the challenge that ends on Sunday. Being from South Florida I know that you may end up with no electricity and or internet access for days after the storm has passed. Another tip from a floridean, you will never regret having a small generator, best prices at Costco. Good luck to you all.

Yeah I checked this morning but they where all out :(

Good call, I just uploaded my Product original. No ribbon, but might squeeze into top 5.

looking like a direct hit on Galveston and Houston. The storm is due to make landfall late tonight early Saturday.
Many of the streets in Galveston are already under water due to the rising tide.

Stay safe everyone

I've been hearing sirens all night
Looks like our firefighters and police are going to have a challenge this weekend

No worries
I don't plan on being one of those fools who are going to be on the news shouting and waving at the cameras in the midle of the storm

Most of us are pretty safe unless tornadoes start spawning then one must start praying hail maries

Our neighborhood has really pulled together and everyone is helping each other prepare their homes. It is a beautiful morning here right now - hard to believe the day is about to change so dramatically.

My cousin, who's stationed in Galveston with the coast guard, flew into Philadelphia last night. I'm shocked they let him go, but his leave has been scheduled for months. Good luck to everyone there!

That is if we have electricity to upload them
They are predicting at least two weeks without electricity
It's going to get hot down here

Ike is directly south of me now. The West side of Galveston is already under water it looks like. Looks like he will not get as strong as they predicted, so stay high and dry everyone. We are expecting pretty good surge here...similar to Rita.

These are some pictures of our damage from Rita who hit the Texas/Louisana border if you are interested. CAUTION TO THE WEAK STOMACHS:SOME MORBID PICTURES IN THIS COLLECTION. One of the pictures of the fallen sugarcane was Photo of the Day on the Weather Chanel.

Put the damn plywood up!!! We're actually bracing our fences!! Gonna be a wild one...

yah yah yah, however I think Galveston is going to have it worse. Dallas will be getting some nastiness too. This thing is huge, eeveryone in Texas and LA needs to brace themselves.

The storm surge is exceeding what they originally expected. Do you have your water wings, Jaime?? Mr. tough guy....lol. Just be careful!!! Parts of LA are already without power (again).

This is just horrible. The Seawall in Galveston may hold, but the tide will go over.
And the storm is just now approaching.

Just makes me sick.

My guess is that Galveston will most under water when the storm hits. I hope everyone has gotten out of there. Its not going to be pretty.

Thanks everyone.

The house is all boarded up. We are as ready as we can be. Should be an interesting night.

Odd how these things things seem to come ashore in the middle of the night. Rita was the same way.

I'll try to get some pics.

Praying for all my Southeast Texas brothers and sisters out there.
