Sparked by a comment on my recent submission, and some identicle comments I had to share about some other photos, I just had to put this out there.

It amazes me how wildly different everyone sees things. This week 4 pictures shared my highest rating. Two of them finished in 1st and 4th, but the other two finished in 37th and 93rd. Ninety freaking third!! I look at that and just can't helped but be amazed. Am I just smoking something, or what?

I'm wondering how many others saw shots this time which they really liked and rated very high, only to see them finish with some astonishingly low ranking.

Yeah, there were a few (I liked that 93rd one too). I don't think that the majority of people take a lot of time to vote. Our view is a probably a little skewed because the people who read/post on the forums are probably more likely to take extra time to comment and vote carefully. It seems that things even slightly non-standard get a lower score than I usually believe they deserve...

Or the people who post on the forums have nice jobs that give them good internet access ;o)

I like the 93rd but the extreme loss of image quality due to over flash left me cold. If it had been a better photographed macro I would have rated it much higher. Number 37 was also a favorite of mine early in the voting but the ceiling color started to bother me more and more as the week went on and it slipped.

My lowest ranked choice was number 72. I had it in my top 10 because I liked the cropping..but some didn't like the cropping. I like the simplicity and it wasnt just a flag on a pole in the sky :-)

Number 56 was also a favorite because it is well imaged (other than some slight oversharpening maybe) and I am partial to window washing shots :-)

Number 39 was also nice as it was a unique and well compsoed piece but I told the photographer that the washed out looked was going to hurt an otherwise nice image.

I liked 39, but I'll tell ya, those others did not a darn thing for me. Not that they are bad photos, just didn't happen to float my boat. And yes, 56 seemed a bit oversharpened, but otherwise well composed.

I guess this goes to show how highly subjective any voting process will be. No matter what system is implemented, it will still be subject to the vast differences inherent in human perception and opinion.

As far as lives and jobs. I am just lucky to have a job where I work from home, wear my pajamas at the desk and putz over the most mundane of engineering drawings you ever seen....nyah..nyah..nyah :-P

I can multi-task. I post on Monday mornings when I'm waiting for my 50 payroll checks to process, print, and update. Other days I'm waiting for my invoices to print out. I also can take a break now and then.

Do you need a job Clay? Just being nosy.

Hey, I admit it. I have a job, but no life. I hang out here way too much to be normal.

But, back to the topic at hand. (Slap, slap, slap)

Any others out there who rated some stuff really high, like 9's or 10's, and now see it near the bottom of the list?

How about those of you who rated any of the top 10 with 1's or 2's? C'mon, fess up...

the only one in the top 10 that i liked was the bug looking down. i think i actually gave the cat one a 2 or 3.

i also liked 19, 22, and 93. 93 was cool to me *because* it was so blown out and luminous. really arty.

30, 31, and 32 were all nice.

i'm always surprised by what wins. it's never what I ranked high : ).

btw, i'm in the category of cushy job with net access ; )

Yeah, I really liked 30 as well. Nice, raw, natural feel to it.

Another one which surprised me at how low it scored was 71. Nice lighting.

My theory is that if your extremes end up at the extremes (even if you got them mixed up like all your favorites at the bottom of the list), then there's hope for you - you can spot the images that people react strongly to (or you're heavily into cr@p).

Ok you wanna see how different people are on here? Look at the bottom of the results. The top 3 by voters and the top 3 by photographers only have 1 like image. I felt the same way that some of you feel about images that I rated highly being low and vice versa.

You didn't like mine ? I'm hurt! :) Actually, I didn't really think it was very good - certainly shouldn't have been in the top 10...

Mind you, I'm getting far and away my worst scores this time, for what I think is one of my best pictures :)

There's no accounting for taste...

it's funny to me how my two top rated photos were both number 13, considering that no. 13 is the name of my most successful recording project. check it out ...

No. 13

The 93rd was decent, but I still hold that the one that finished 95th sucked.

Oops, that was inane. Plus the 95th actually was cool.

Each of my challenge entries has gotten progressively lower scores since I joined this site and that trend seems to be continuing.. lol Maybe I need to rethink my methods.. ;)
