I hope that this all works out good and that you will end up with a better camera through your insurance. Do you mean that your 350 D is history, trash, junk, paperweight? Or are they sending it to Canon to get a quote and see if it can be repaired?

Shez, I think the XTi uses the same memory cards/batteries as your 350, but from what I'm reading the XSi (450) uses different cards and batteries so you wouldn't be able to use the gear you already have.
Hopefully one of the other who own these cameras can help on this. Both look like amazing cameras!!

Yes, the XTi does use the same cards, same battery, with the battery being the biggie - means you can still use any spares you have! |

Got it, Shez, and a huge thanks to Roz! I'm sure hers will get there much sooner, since I suspect when I mail stuff from the Post here it goes to the US first then on to the final destination.

Yay Roz (and Deb). So sorry you're going through this, Shez.
I was shooting an event last weekend, in waders, in a creek with boulders as well as smaller rocks. Some riders entered from the "wrong" place, I chatted with them while moving to be able to shoot them with the 70-200 and fell over a shin-high boulder, then another and another. Held the camera aloft out of the water, which came over the top of the bib overalls into my iPod, leaving me about knee high in water inside, strained everything to hold the camera up. Shredded my shin up to my knee on the rocks. The tiniest corner of the camera touched the water, it was like slow motion yelling noooooo, it's noooottt insurrrrred!
I had to keep shooting with all that freezing water inside the waders. Got to dump it out after a while and put them back on for insulation. The show must go on, and all of that! Doing jumping jacks because of being freezing. Stripped to the bone on the side of the road to change when all of the riders were through.
My lovely 5g video iPod is toast. :-( Not as expensive as a Rebel but not affordable to replace it at this time. Thankfully my truck's electronic key fob was ok.
Shez, hope this gave you a chuckle, visualizing that! ETA: it was funny the minute it happened, and got funnier as time marched on. Even the sun was fickle, not giving me a warm place to stand as riders continued to arrive. And of course changing clothes on the side of the road was even more amusing.

hey lynne .. i'm sitting here laughing ..
i reckon photographers are a breed unto themselves ..
i've just had a very exciting morning .. my brother burns off the trees that we cut down .. we live in a rural area on acres .. anyway one of his piles that he was burning off got a bit out'v control .. i was working at the computer, vaugely aware of a smokey smell, but so engrossed and not wanting to interrupted that i took no notice .. after a while the smoke got a bit worse so i looked out my window .. i didnt even have to move out'v my chair .. !!! .. and the burn-off seemed a bit larger than it had a few hours before .. to cut a long story short .. the rural fire brigade was called and its now under control ..
BUT .. when i first walked/ran over .. i had my camera with me ..
when i went over for the second time after realising how bad it was .. i had my camera with me ..
when the rural fire brigade came .. i took a heap of photographs of them putting out the fire ..
i mean .. when else will i ever get that sort'v chance again ..
when i first saw the fire my first thought wasnt 'danger danger' .. but ahha .. a photographic opportunity ..!! ..
i think i have a problem ..:)
ps .. just in case anyone thinks my brother was irresponsible .. the fire was a million to one chance .. its winter here and cold .. that's why we have the rural fire brigade .. shit happens .. :)

THANKS again Deb..... Have a great holiday, and them come back and save for an Australian one.
You know we would love to have you come and stay with us, and maybe even Roz, and Brian..... Make it a three week one, so we can share you, or they can all come up here, and we would have a convention.....

LOL!! Great stories, both of you! Yes, we are sick, sick people. Nice to have such great company, though! Lynne - INSURE THAT CAMERA!!! Seriously, it'd be worth it given the conditions you often find yourself shooting in. Shouldn't cost all that much, whereas replacement would be a pretty penny...
Shez, when I do come to Australia, we will definitely have a convention of sorts! |

Shez, When I upgraded i moved up to the 30D (40D wasn't then released).
I must say though, I have smallish hands and it took quite a bit of getting used to the weight.
Knowing that you too have smallish hands I'd recommend the latest model in the range to replace yours - 450D.
Don't be scared of new things - see them as exciting - GRIN!
And with the $1,000 you should easily get a new body for the price!
Hoping it all comes through for you.
Mine ended up being too costly to replace - which the repairer needed to specify for my insurance to come good.
Thinking of you,
Lisa |

Shez, Sorry for your loss of a camera but what a great way to learn how wonderful friends can truly be. Way to go Deb, and Roz. |

Thanks, Deb, of course you're right. Roz, yep, we're a funny bunch. Do any of us leave home without some sort of camera?
What's humorous is that I can see the difference in the shots where I was dry and those where I was soaked and shivering, most were high ISO in a dark creek. Here are the shots if you want to see, they begin on page 12 or so of that gallery.
Yay for insurance, Shez! Just think of the fabulous improvements in low light shooting plus isn't there shutter cleaning in the newest Rebel? |

The controls on the 30D/40D are different, too, and would take some getting used to.
If it were me, I'd adjust to the larger camera and new controls, but given what you said earlier you may want to stick to the consumer line. Note that the latest consumer models (1000D, 450D) use SD memory cards - not compact flash cards. |

What the heck is a 1000D? And based on what Lady Shez has said, even though the 400D XTi isn't the latest and greatest, I suspect it has the most in common with the 350D and would be the easiest to adapt to. I rather like the little beast. |

Yay! I am glad shez has a camera on the way...I have been thinking about how to help but feel at a loss because of the distance between us.
What an awesome community! |

I agree. =)
For the record:
Consumer: 300d, 350d (XT), 400d (XTi), 450d (XSi), 1000d (XS)
Prosumer: ... 20d, 30d, 40d, (likely 50d tomorrow)
You can compare the specs side-by-side (ala dpreview.com) to decide what has been upgraded. The resolution and LCD size may be important. The 350D has a small, 1.8" LCD and 8MP, the XSi has a big 3" LCD and 12.2MP, the other two have 2.5" and 10.1MP. The XSi and 1000D have Live View.
Cheers,
-Jeff |

Each and everyone of you are so very special to me, and to the DPC community. I thank you kindly for all your support, love, and suggestions.
At the moment I am taking one day at a time, as I have to go back into hospital tomorrow for the procedure to stretch my Oesophagus again, due to it being to narrow and no muscle movement, as I am choking quite a lot again. They thought they could put a stint or a small balloon in to enlarge an area, but cannot due to the whole length of my Oesophagus is narrow, with lots of scar tissue.
I will be ok, but it does take a lot out of me, and also just another expense for my family.
Please remember there are always many others that need help, but for me, the help that you have given me is so rewarding, and so special, and will never know how to repay you all. |

The only repayment we want is for you to get back here healthy and shoting your beautiful art. Take care, this will all sort itself out with time, and the help of friends.

Yesterday I had the procedure done to stretch my Oesophagus, and today feeling like I have been run over my a bus. Slept most of yesterday after I got home. Not feeling to good at all today.
Roz's camera arrived yesterday in the mail, and it is still in the box, as I am not feeling well enough to unpack it just yet. I am so grateful to her for sending her spare camera to me, to use while they sort out my camera, that I accidentally dropped. She is indeed, a very special friend.
I think my body is totally wacko, with all that has happened this past week, and also my head. Guess I was more upset than I thought. Thanks for all you support, as it means a lot to me.

Get some rest, dear girl, and take your time getting back on your feet. Don't worry about cameras and such - you have one you can use while everything else gets sorted out regarding the broken one. Just take each day at a time, and make sure you check in with us when you can so we know how you're doing! |
