hey! i no this really has nothing to do with this thread, but my cat was stalking a bird and i threw my broom at him to make him stop. i went up to the bird to scare it off into a tree, but he kinda just sat there and looked at me. my cat came back so i picked up the bird and he sat on my finger and just looked at me. it is now too dark for him to fly so im gonna hold onto him til tomorrow morning and let him out. i just now tried to let him go and he fell asleep on my finger. too bad its too dark for photos

I am sick of that guy who keeps taking all those pictures of Woodies. I mean Jeeze enough already, try taking some pictures of REAL people for once. And whats with all the bird themed pictures, I mean common people cant you find something interesting to photograph? Let me tell you boy if I ever see another picture of a flower, or a baby or a sunset or a bug or a ducky or a tree or a woman or a closeup or any of those things it will be too soon. Nobody has any originality, they just keep shooting the same old same old.

At least the pros keep things original like that Ann Geddes lady, she has such a wide repertoire of shots that she is known for, always mixing it up and changing the theme. That's good photography for you.

Damnit, I was trying for running over with sarcasm. I guess I need more practice.

Repeated or not, how good are they? I find many images to enjoy in this challenge, with the smattering of extra originality a plus when it happens. To my eye, the images that look similar have wide variation in composition, sharpness, color balance, simplicity, depth of field, and impact. Assuming you take all that into account, a point or two more for extra originality after evaluating the other artistic/technical merits seems reasonable to me.

After the voting, let's take a look at the scores to see if a consequence of similarity is detectable. Do excellent photos do worse for having familiar subjects? Do the more original images get rewarded with higher scores? Do original images get beaten down despite excellent design and fresh conceptualization? (The OOBIE awards arose to compensate for that, which is frequent enough to notice.) Of course, any of this may be hard to detect given the controveries over the merits of "finding" the color out in the world compared to adding/enhancing in post-processing, even if perfectly "legal" in basic editing. Oh well, flawed study concept beyond redemption. Forget I mentioned it.

It could be just that they are too scared to try something new, in case they fail....or they just don't know how to move on and try something new. Whatever the case.....a comment or two could just make the difference.

I do try to help the site with my comments, but I am more than a little amused at the thought of me, with my barely 5 avg, trying to "guide" a multiple ribbon winner into something new. :D

That being said, DrAchoo just won a Posthumous ribbon, so anything is possible!!

You would be surprised how you could help a person. Often, one cannot see the forest for the trees...you work on an image both in setup and processing...and by the end, you have seen that image so much, that you just cannot see where to improve. The slightest remark from anyone can offer be the trigger to solving areas that has had the photographer stuck for sometime, no matter the experience of the viewer. How many times have people asked non-photographers for their opinion on an image? Why? Because any feedback is good and often enough to guide them in a direction that can take them out of the rut and onto new things.

I think I am figuring out the secret to this site. Look at the results and you might notice that places 1 - 16 ALL had water in them. Landscapes over water and water droplets mainly.

Oh good...maybe I will go drown myself...!

I just figured out that the abstract may have been an opportunity to shoehorn in a water droplet shot. Maybe the next few challenges I should just plan on shooting water. I foresee a lot of overexposed water droplets in the future.

Hmm maybe I will join you - actually there's a thought if I wear a black outfit and you wear a white one we could enter it in to the black and white abstract challenge (Ahh damnit too late) ;)

Hey I like your line of thinking...we may just have to do that for a challenge!

Actually I will go and find a black outfit that's just to die for :p

Hmmmm...I have a white boa....will that do....oh wait...are you sure this idea hasn't been done before...otherwise we may get the 'been-done-before-police' hitting us with low votes.

well reading your post in the over exposed thread that you reference your "lilly white ass" I think if you just wear the Boa the shot could do well ;)

In addition...if you can take a water drop shot that is ANYWHERE NEAR IreneM quality you will get at least a one point bump if they think it is hers.

If your shot truly deserves a 5 and people connect to IreneM then you will get a 6.

Just my opinion of course...and don't take this as a slam against Irene or Water Drops !

I hear ya, but I think your being a little lenient. It would be a score of 8 and maybe a bump to 9. I'm not trying to take anything away from Irene, but if you see a water drop of decent quality, you automatically assume that it is Irene, and there goes the score. It's incredible that water drops can bring so many ribbons. Who would have believed. Let's not give credit to the other good pictures submitted, except for 2, since there are 3 ribbons. Needless to say, I have stopped entering challenges, because even if you submit a really good picture, if there is a water drop in the same challenge, you can be sure that it will definitly place in the top 3. I have been watching this same thing, and find it incredible that water drops can be so fascinating. I myself thought that it was pretty neat in the beginning, but this is getting old now. I thought 6th place was a better shot myself.
