These aren't something I've had experience with. Family photos aren't a big thing in Japan where you take the family out to a location and do a shoot with them. However, I'm heading back to Canada for 2 weeks and my sisters friend has offered to do this for us. I have no idea as to the quality of her photography. All I know is she's "Just starting out."

Here's my question: Is it common to have the family members wear matching (Color) clothing? Say, all khaki pants/shorts/dresses with blue or pinkish shirts?

I'd always imagine a family shoot being something like the ladies wearing summer colored dresses and complementing each other (Color wise) while the men just wore neutral colors or something. Any ideas. I know that the friend will be fine with whatever we decide, she gets paid the same regardless, but I thought I would ask before jumping into a pair of pants I don't like.

Uhm, yes, its hugely popular for families to wear -not matching- but coordinating clothing. Why? So the attention is drawn to the people, not the clothing. I suggest to clients that they not match, but coordinate......like they all belong to the same well-decorated room. The last family session I shot, the girls all wore pink, guys white and everone in khaki. Remember, it about the people, and you'll be fine.

My last shoot was similar - everyone wore khakis, the guys wore navy blue polos, and the girls wore white polos.

Would summer dresses (In summer colors, similar but not the same) for the ladies, and khakis with polo shirts for the men be good? Or is that too 'different' that it wouldn't be good as a family photo shoot?

As long as the dresses are not too 'busy' with a pattern, they should be fine. Keep in mind that any exposed skin is going to draw attention away from the face, so opting for dresses with a small sleeve will be much better than sleeveless ones.

I am sure you guys will be fine. Pastel coloured dresses, khaki pants, and polos... mmmmmm I smell summer :)

We had a family shoot last year, everyone was supposed to wear a dark colored shirt preferrably black. We all showed up wearing black shirt except for 2 people who showed up wearing bright red. needless to say they stuck out like a sore thumb...

Everyone was surprised and delighted (except for maybe 2 people) when they got a copy of the group photo and the red shirts had somehow been changed to match the color of the groups shirts. So I guess you can wear what ever you want and change it later but it really is much easier to make it clear what everyone should wear and hope everyone listens.

watch out for that...my wife (she has six brothers and sisters) had a 'family photo' taken of her and her siblings for her mother. (this is what they get for not having me take it!)

anyways, the had the portrait taken. For some oddball reason they all wore white. They looked like a poster for your local doomsday cult.
:D

Why not do away with clothes altogether? Problem solved. ;-Þ

stay away from red clothing, red is a color we tend to look at first in a photo.

with kids-shoots parents always ask me what the kids should wear. I always suggest a white shirt without sleeves and jeans. In the studio that works best and it's timeless.
