Yet again my camera conspired against me today. When I take my time with the settings, things are great. But in fast moving situations (usually involving children or parties) I'm often left staring at the menus with a confused look on my face wondering why it's not firing properly. Three examples of camera features which have prevented me from capturing a 'moment';

- Red-eye flash mode is on, meaning I'm getting a lag between pressing the shutter and the shot
or
- Auto-focus isn't locking on
or
- Flash hasn't recycled

So what I'd like in my next camera would be an emergency button, or perhaps a 'press-the-shutter-really-hard' type function, which makes the camera just take the shot immediately with whatever settings will let it capture the best shot for the conditions (e.g. change to ISO1600 if the flash hasn't recycled, switch focus to infinity (or just use the last focus point) if focus hasn't locked, you get the idea)

Oh you beautiful dreamer... It's called the "idiot button" and it hasn't been invented yet...

{smile} That camera exists, it's called a point-and-shoot. You can get 8MP for not too much $$, it fits in your shirt pocket & you can snapshoot away without intimidating any of your subjects & without touching anything but the shutter release. But the 'real photographers' might be tempted to look down their noses at you!!

Oh... I like the "press the button really hard" idea. (but you'd have to be careful not to wear it out)

What I want is a camera that knows what I'm "thinking" of it doing instead of what I'm "telling" it to do.

For that matter, I want a post-processing program that does that as well.

I would like to add to it the "you left your ISO at 1600 from last night's basketball game" warning buzzer.

Yeah, no kidding...or the reset the anti-shake button back to 'On' after shooting in 'Off' mode on the tripod.

Been there done that, that would be a great feature.

My Canon S3 has a one-touch movie button -- I think it captures movies in an auto-exposure mode and disregards the still-image settings, so one of the frames has a good chance of capturing the subject, although at a low resolution.

AND you can press the shutter button during filming and it will take a full-size still image in the middle of the video. You'll see and hear a little "click" when you watch the video later.

The solution is "simple" (to envision at least): we need a true "RAW" image, consisting of a 3 dimensional representation of the scene, so that you can do the composition, focusing, and processing after the fact. I do recall reading in the last year or so about a camera in which you could focus "after the fact". Here's a link from a quick search--I think this is the same technology I read about.

But until that's available, you should be able to switch your camera to auto on the mode dial, and it should deal with most settings for you.

I wish when I turned my camera on a message would flash "You left your CF card in the computer again, you moron!!", that way I wouldn't waste 20 or 30 shots before figuring out that they weren't being saved to anything.

That would make a huge difference for my aging eyes. It is so frustrating to not feel safe using manual focus while also not trusting autofocus.

You need an upgrade. Most newer cameras will do that for you (well, not quite the same message), when you make the correct menu selection to set it up.

I might as well jump on the bandwagon too.

I want my camera to tell me that I forgot my quick release plate for my tripod at home BEFORE I walk 3 miles with my tripod on my shoulder.

I want a camera that will remove the strap for me JUST BEFORE it gets in my way as I shoot in studio.

I would love for my camera to tell me if I uploaded the pics I took yesterday BEFORE I swipe my card clean.

How 'bout the upgrade to that? A camera that knows what a talented photographer of your choice would be thinking in your situation. Same deal for PP. :-)

You mean your camera doesn't have Jedi-mode? :-)

Are you using on-camera flash? An external flash could help alleviate some of those issues... no wait for red-eye reduction, AF-beam helping with low-light autofocus (using a fast lens helps a lot too), and faster recycle times. With the red-eye thing, just disable that in-camera if using on-camera flash, then quick fix it in PS if you do get any demon eyes. I remember they used to sell red-eye markers back in the film days to physically touch-up red eyes in photos.

To get back to the original problem, I recently came across an advert for a Sony P&S with what they call "Smile shutter technology". You just point the camera in the right direction and don't even have to push a button. When the camera sees a smile, it automatically focuses and shoots. Of course you may miss a great expression that isn't a smile...

Memories,
Like the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were

Scattered pictures,
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were

Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we? could we?

Actually, Panasonic have just introduced the 'Idiot Assist' function in their new DMC-LX3;

While the Panasonic DMC-LX3 allows full manual control for more advanced photography, the camera also allows user to take perfect shots with outstanding ease. This is made possible by Panasonic Lumix’s iA (Intelligent Auto) mode. In iA mode the camera does all the work, activating Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection, and Intelligent Exposure. This leaves the user free to simply compose the shot and press the shutter button, with the assurance that the image will be clear, beautiful and properly exposed.
