Is there a way to get a caption on everyone's entry that reads: "The subject of the photograph may not reflect the belief of the photographer".

I have a few ideas but they are likely to anger a few people. I came to realize that it is difficult to do propaganda without raising a few eyebrows (or fists).

Since the images are anonymous until voting, I would say just put that in the details section of your submission.

Besides, trinch, stirring the pot is what Propaganda is all about.

However, I think most people will take the safer route and go with advertising. after all, what genre could be more saturated with propaganda?

I hope that's not the case though. It would be a very boring challenge. I'd rather see some pot stiring going on, weather they truly reflect the photographer's view or not. Propaganda is about propigating "a" point of view, which may or may not be "your" point of view.

I'm struggling for ideas though. Most of what comes to mind is the WWII type stuff that has text and "inspirational" saying right on the image. Obviously we can't do that here.

2 : the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person
3 : ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one's cause or to damage an opposing cause; also : a public action having such an effect

personally i think this would be a better challenge if we could add text to our pics for this one ..

I dont understand this word

Most effective propaganda (and yes I'm thinking WW2 also) had a very succinct text message along with the dramatic image.

loose lips, sink ships, that sort of thing.

Propaganda has historically been geared toward the lowest common denominator. That is why the images were always colorful or dramatic, very heroic or stylized and the wording was basic.

On the other hand; The image needed to convey the idea to those that couldn't read. So if the text that would be added to the image as a poster was the title,, that could work also.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

JC, you're irony submission would have worked very well for this challenge.

the biggest difference for me between propaganda and advertising, is that you are selling an idea instead of a product.
11/12/2003 11:40:38 AM · #16
loose lips, sink ships, that sort of thing.

Doesn't this also fit into the "literalisms" challenge? I have been thinking about that. My first impression was that it meant things like "Don't send a boy to do a man's job" and "The early bird gets the worm." However, after some research I see that it means any sentence where you take the words literally. Such as a photo of a person with a miners hat on, neon necklaces, a flashlight in hand etc with the title being "My doctor told me to lighten up a bit."
Any thoughts about this?

Well now I think it was my first impression as I just looked at the submission page and it said "take a common phrase etc."

HEHEHH<,, ooops..

I tried,, that's what I get for using an online translator.

I can see I'll be in real trouble if I ever get to Iceland!

I don't even want to think which bathroom I'll end up in or what I'll be ordering for dinner.

sorry.

This kind of thing

or more recently

Saving Private Lynch

a good bible picture would also be very on topic, given the origin of the word.

I can see I'm in real trouble.
First time I went to a Polish Resteraunt (Tatra's in Chicago) I wanted soup. So I order Czanina,, trying to be cool and not asking what it was.

Ducks blood soup w/ raisins.. mmmmm definitely an acquired taste.

I feel this will be a challenge where the voters MUST put their personal feelings aside and just vote on the photo. Of course some photos will need to use the voters emotions/feelings to express the photo the way the photographer wanted it expressed. But dont let personal feelings lower a photo's score because you dont agree with the subject matter.
