Bright sun makes life difficult. The shadows are nasty in most cases. Use your flash whenever possible.

I thought I'd add this:
Try not to get tackled by the players. It hurts.
I've been tackled at both soccer and "american" football games. It's not fun for you or the player. It's easy to get caught up in the action and not realize exactly how close the sport is getting to you.
Also, I've had race cars spin out of control towards me. At racing events PLEASE STAY BEHIND some sort of HARD BARRIER.
